WASHINGTON, D.C. — In San Francisco and here in the nation’s capital, liberal politicians are preparing economic boycotts against Arizona because it had the guts to crack down on the illegal aliens who violate federal laws with sneering impunity.
The District of Columbia Council, incompetent beyond imagining in governing the 599,000 overtaxed souls who inhabit its 68.2 square miles, has the audacity to demand that Arizona ignore the drug-runners, human traffickers and murderers who have wreaked havoc in the Grand Canyon State for much of the past decade.

After an opening round of bluff and bluster, Mayor Gavin Newsom and the city's public employee unions are close to a badly needed budget deal. To save an estimated $200 million over two years, city workers may accept unpaid time off during the end-of-year holidays. Also, threatened layoffs will be trimmed from 1,500 to 500.
The deal signals the hard reality of San Francisco's finances. With the city facing a $483 million shortfall beginning in July, pay rates for more than 25,000 city employees had to take a hit. The agreement, which needs ratifying by some 20 unions, isn't a one-year fix, but instead runs for two.
