Local officials received assurances from federal agencies on Wednesday that there is no coordination between the United States and Mexican governments in the transfer of patients injured in Mexico's drug wars to Thomason Hospital.
Thomason CEO Jim Valenti, hospital Board of Managers Chairman Ron Acton and County Commissioner Veronica Escobar met with U.S. Rep. Silvestre Reyes, D-Texas, and leaders from Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Customs and Border Protection and the Department of Homeland Security in Washington, D.C., Wednesday afternoon to discuss the issue.

Valenti said Reyes assured local officials that he will look for potential funding sources to pay for the medical and security costs associated with the patients' treatment.

Valenti also said the federal government agreed to study instances of people injured in Mexico being transferred to United States' hospitals for treatment.

The two-hour meeting was arranged by Reyes after he received requests from local officials for help after more than 20 patients who are thought to have been injured in drug war-related violence were transferred to Thomason for treatment since the beginning of the year.

Why does anything need to be discussed and to do the gov'ts favorite thing: studies? Our hospitals are going belly up because of illegals coming to the emergency rooms for primary care like hangnails. And thank you Mexico, not negotiating to take these people back cause taxpayer dollars in the US (lots of them) will pay for these folks.
