SEATTLE -- The man who walked into the hospital with severe burns earlier this month may have been set on fire by those to whom he owed money.
According to the police report, the man walked into the emergency room at Swedish Hospital at approximately 4:10 a.m. on April 14 with burns to 70 to 80 percent of his body.
Investigators questioned the victim's cousin, who said he'd come home just minutes before "burned severely wearing only his boxer shorts," the report said. The victim has sustained burns to his face, back, arms and legs, according to detectives.
The woman said the victim had been taken by "several men because he owed them money," the statement said. The victim told her the men took him to an unknown location, doused him with gasoline and set him on fire to "teach him a lesson," the woman told investigators.
Investigators, with the aid of a translator, questioned the victim's Spanish-speaking girlfriend, who said the man owed $6,000 to a person in Mexico "for both of them to come to the United States," the report said. It wasn't clear when the payment had been due, and exactly what services had been rendered for the payment.
The victim's cousin said the victim and his girlfriend had been living with her for the past few weeks after having arrived in Seattle from Mexico via a bus. The cousin, at the request of her aunt, had agreed to let them stay for three weeks "until they got on their feet," the document said.
The victim's girlfriend said she was in the bathroom when she heard a knock on the door at around 4 p.m. on April 13. She said she heard the victim answering the door, then yelling for her. When she came out, however, the victim was already gone, and she didn't know where he went, she said.
The woman feared the man had been taken against his will, she told investigators. She did not alert authorities, however, and "no reason was provided for the delay in the reporting of (the victim's) disappearance," the report said.
The victim called his cousin the following morning at approximately 3:20 a.m. to be let in the building, at which time she saw that he'd suffered severe burns and took him to Swedish Hospital.
The victim's cousin told investigators she doesn't believe he was involved with narcotics since he's just arrived in the area and doesn't know anyone. The victim could not identify the location he'd been taken to, and that "all he remembered was a big open empty field," the woman told detectives.
Investigators said they're reviewing surveillance footage captured by cameras at the victim's cousin's apartment complex for further clues. They have no suspects.
The victim was transported to Harborview Medical Center for further treatment, but his current condition was not known.

If he survives he & his girl friend might be able to become US citizens all because they did not pay their smuggling bill.
