Police make 100+ arrests at Capitol immigration rally

Police make arrests at Capitol immigration rally

    ERICA WERNER 4 minutes ago

WASHINGTON (AP) — More than 100 women demanding immigration legislation were arrested outside the U.S. Capitol Thursday after blocking traffic to protest inaction by Congress.

The women, wearing white arm bands and red T-shirts stating "Women for Fair Immigration Reform," held a rally and then joined hands and sat down in a circle on Independence Ave., which runs between the Capitol and House members' offices.

They chanted slogans including "Yes we can!" and "Si se puede" as police began handcuffing them and loading them into vans. Organizers said some two dozen of the women are in the U.S. illegally.

The protest came as immigration legislation remains stalled in the GOP-led House months after the Democratic-controlled Senate passed a sweeping bill in June with billions for border security and a path to citizenship for millions. Lawmakers returned to Washington this week after a five-week summer recess with no clear way forward on the issue.

One participant in the protest, Maria Galban of Los Angeles, who said she is a Mexican citizen in the U.S. illegally, said she wanted to send a message to Congress that immigration reform is needed to keep families like hers together.

She said she and her husband are here illegally but their two daughters have gained legal status under a program by President Barack Obama to stop deportations of immigrants brought to the country as youths.

"We need immigration reform. We want to contribute economically to this country," said Galban, 43, who said she can't get the license she needs to work as a hairdresser because she doesn't have legal status.

Organizers with the group We Belong Together and other organizations said the protest was meant to spotlight the impact of the nation's faulty immigration system on women and families. They said House Republicans need to act.

"They should show the same courage as these women," said Marielena Hincapie, executive director of the National Immigration Law Center, who was among those being arrested.

U.S. Capitol Police said the women arrested were being processed but they didn't have immediate information on what they were being charged with.

Immigrant activists arrested in Hill protest

More than 100 female immigrant-rights activists, including some who are in the country illegally, were arrested after they shut down Independence Avenue in front of the Capitol on Thursday, demanding Congress pass a legalization bill.

Organizers said 104 women, including more than 20 who are in the country illegally, were arrested, in the second major act of civil disobedience this year to shut down the main thoroughfare along the Capitol.

The arrests are also a key test of President Obama’s policies promising not to deport rank-and-file illegal immigrants who don’t have major criminal records.

The activists were trying to keep pressure on Congress, where momentum for an immigration bill has stalled amid other thorny legislative business such as potential attacks on Syria and dealing with the annual spending bills.

Patty Kupfer, managing director of activist groupAmerica’s Voice, said she was proud to be one of those arrested.

“Today’s action is about women and how they bear a tremendous burden trying to keep their families together when faced with deportation,” she said.

Among those risking arrest were mothers who are here illegally, and whose children have been granted tentative legal status under the president’s non-deportation policy for young illegal immigrants.
They said their goal was to demonstrate that deportations split families apart and hurt women.

The activists said they wanted to put pressure on GOP leaders, who are trying to negotiate a tricky path. The leaders have signaled they want to act on immigration, but it appears a majority of House Republicans do not want to pass anything that could be considered amnesty for those in the country illegally.

The Senate earlier this year passed a bipartisan bill, 68-32, that gave illegal immigrants a pathway to citizenship and would also spend tens of billions of dollars to hire agents to patrol the southwest border.

Fed up with the impasse in Congress over immigration reform, scores of women staged a protest and blocked traffic outside the U.S. Capitol Thursday.

Police arrested more 100 of them.

The women, wearing white arm bands and red T-shirts that read, "Women for Fair Immigration Reform," held a rally and then joined hands and sat down in a circle on Independence Ave., which runs between the Capitol and House members' offices.

One participant in the protest, Maria Galban of Los Angeles, who said she is a Mexican citizen in the U.S. illegally, said she wanted to send a message to Congress that immigration reform is needed to keep families like hers together. She said that while she and her husband are here illegally, their two daughters have gained legal status under a program by President Barack Obama to stop deportations of immigrants brought to the country as youths.

"We need immigration reform. We want to contribute economically to this country," said Galban, 43, who said she can't get the license she needs to work as a hairdresser because she doesn't have legal status.

U.S. Capitol Police said the women arrested were being processed on charges of crowding, obstructing or incommoding.
