US Senate nod for 50,000 foreign nurses

    May 12, 2005 19:53 IST

The United States Senate has approved a bill permitting 50,000 foreign nurses to enter the country to meet the huge shortage, a move that will benefit Indian nurses who are much sought after in the country.

Under the bill, sponsored by Democratic Senator Barbara Mikulski, an additional 50,000 foreign nurses will be permitted to enter the country.

The shortage of nurses in the US numbers upto 250,000, according to recent reports.

Indian nurses are preferred by many hospitals in the US because of their better health knowledge and ability to speak fluent English.

The bill also exempted H-2B seasonal guest workers, who have already worked in the US from the 65,000 annual cap.

This will mainly help Mexican workers.

Another immigration provision passed by the Sente seeks to allow 10,500 Australian guest workers to enter the country annually under terms similar to the H-1B high-tech visa category.

With the approval from Senate, the bill is one step short of becoming law, pending the signature of President George W Bush.

US okays 50,000 Nurses for Shortage?

What shortgage? This isn't true. It's there way of keeping health care down. I've known several nurses that were displaced because of this lie.

That's right senators and president import nurses now instead of telling 20 million illegals to leave the country which would allow American school children to receive the education necessary to study the math and science courses at the college level to become nurses. Never thought of that did you? That would be too logical and simple a plan. Instead of investing in American citizens getting a better education, why don't you spend millions, or perhaps billions of tax payer's money to import, process, and possibly even increase the education of "nurses from other countries".You all knew this shortage was coming and in fact was here, but STILL you overcrowd the American schools by letting more than 4,000 people come into America illegally on a daily basis, watering down the education of the American children.
Wow, you guys have sure made a mess of things. Why don't you put the breaks on your wrecking of America.

AND ANOTHER THING..How much is it going to cost to "import nurses"?
How about the thousands of American Citizens who would love very much to become nurses, but cannot afford to stop working as "sub-nurses", such as nursing assistants, and people who could upgrade their education to become R.N.'s. There are so many nursing assistants who have the intelligence to become R.N.'s but simply cannot afford the time without a paycheck to go to school. In particular, there are many black American's working below their capability in the nursing assistant profession, and white American's as well. I know there were some incentives put in place to up the numbers of people graduating from nursing programs, but it was not enough!!! In some cases, they lowered the entrance requirements, which was stupid to begin with. FREE CLASSES SHOULD HAVE AND SHOULD BE MADE AVAILABLE AT NIGHT AT NEIGHBORHOOD SCHOOLS IN MATH AND SCIENCE TO HELP WORKING AMERICANS TO GET INTO NURSING PROGRAMS!!!!!!!!!!! STOP WATERING DOWN AMERICA AND START SUPPORTING AMERICANS BY GIVING THEM A CHANCE. For every nurse you import there are probably 5,000 willing Americans who would like to study to become an R.N.. Let the taxpayer's money go to hospitals willing to start up nursing programs again!! Those hospital nursing programs were GREAT! ! WOW. You guys just don't get it.
