U.S. sets Feb. 18 for children of undocumented immigrants to seek status

    WASHINGTON Thu Jan 29, 2015 8:28pm EST
    Writing by Sandra Maler

(Reuters) - The United States will begin accepting applications on Feb. 18 for temporary legal status from children of undocumented immigrants who came to the United States with their parents, under a plan announced by President Barack Obama last November.

The U.S. Customs and Immigration Service (USCIS) said on Thursday the applications for the program to defer deportation and obtain a 3-year legal status would be available to undocumented immigrants who entered the country as children before 2010.

They will be the first group of immigrants who will benefit from Obama's sweeping immigration reform announced on Nov. 20.

The plan will let up to 4.7 million of the estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants in the United States stay without threat of deportation, including about 4.4 million who are parents of U.S. citizens and legal permanent residents.

As part of the reform, Obama expanded the so-called Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, to include undocumented immigrants who entered the country before 2010, eliminate the requirement that applicants be younger than 31 years old, and lengthen the renewable deferral period to three years from two.

"This expansion is set to benefit nearly 1 million people, and will protect them from deportation and provide them with work permits," United We Dream, an immigrant youth organization, said on Thursday, welcoming the announcement.

Republicans have vowed to fight Obama's immigration plan, charging the president overstepped his constitutional powers in taking the executive action.

I've taught adult immigrants English for 14 yrs. in an area of L.A. that used to be predominantly Hispanic. That's changing to predominantly mainland Chinese as they buy up depressed properties and tear down everything in sight. I started my previous and current careers as a moderate Democrat but have slid to the right after watching and hearing what's going on. I've also become increasingly angry about a lack of efforts to stop what's happening.

It's really quite simple. In the Mexican-American community the view is that this area of California was theirs and they're taking it back. I've heard it expressed outright or in more PC formats but it's really clear, even among very educated Mexican individuals. The message this amnesty is sending is reinforcing that view, in my opinion. There are no consequences for simply walking in, applying for benefits that haven't been earned. This isn't limited to Mexican and Central American immigrants. We've noted many many Chinese students who drive BMWs and wear really expensive gold jewelry clocking into the Cal Works (welfare-to-work) time clock. Their assets are in someone else's name so they qualify. They seek free medical care at the L.A. County clinic next door and tell their friends how to do it (I've heard those conversations). It's disgraceful and a real slap in the face to our students who've gone through the lengthy and cumbersome naturalization and citizenship process. It's also creating huge problems on roads and in neighborhoods as arrivals fail to assimilate, really learn to drive, and master the English language. For CA I truly believe it's a money issue as large tax revenues are collected for car registrations for top-end cars and construction of large homes and businesses.

I'm happy to be retiring in June because I simply can't swallow driving, walking through, and hearing evidence of the sell-out that's occurring in communities surrounding our school. It's evident in my home city to a somewhat lesser extent and there's a greater effort to facilitate assimilation. Help us all.

Thank you so much for your post, meredit. It is indeed a very sad time in our country. We're surrounded by illegal aliens who want our country to use up and spit out and politicians who can't sell it out and give it away fast enough. It's mind-boggling and heart-breaking.
