Illegal Immigrant Charged With Killing Wife While Free on Bail, Awaiting Deportation

An illegal immigrant killed his teenage wife in New York while he was free on bail awaiting deportation, police say.

Paul Amay, 25, is charged with second degree murder for allegedly strangling his 19-year-old wife Graciela "Gloria" Zhingri Amay outside her parents' Lake Secor home, then dragging her into the house and repeatedly stabbing her in the chest, the Journal News reported.

Zhingri's body was discovered about 3 a.m. on Christmas Eve.

Amay was turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement in March after he’d served four months of a six-month sentence for driving with a blood-alcohol level more than three times the legal limit with his then infant son unrestrained in the car, the Journal News reported. He was released on March 22 after posting bail.

But incarceration is nothing new for the native Ecuadorian.

Amay had been arrested at least four other times for public drunkenness or disorderly conduct, and police had responded to several domestic disturbances between him and his wife prior to his last arrest, the Journal News reported.

An order of protection meant to keep him away from his wife expired in August.

Amay was scheduled to appear in court in late January for a hearing on whether he would be sent back to his native Ecuador.

Amay is now due in Carmel Town Court Wednesday to face the murder charge. If convicted, he faces 25 years to life in prison.

Mahopac man accused of killing wife was facing deportation

Her parents expressed their grief and dismay Monday over the killing, describing their daughter's husband as abusive and dangerous.

"I want him to stay in jail for the rest of his life," said her mother, Maria Zhingri. "I don't want him to hurt anyone else."

Zhingri said her daughter had been with Amay for more than two years and that they lived together in Carmel. Three days before the slaying, the parents said, Gloria, 19, asked to stay with them in their Agor Lane house.

Experts say the most dangerous time for victims of domestic violence can be when they leave their abusers or are preparing to leave.

"My daughter said he treated her very badly," Maria Zhingri said, adding that she thinks Gloria stayed with him because he threatened her.

Gloria's father, Julio Zhingri, said Amay did not work and was a heavy drinker. His daughter, he said, supported him.

"We are very sad. This is a very big loss for us," he said. "I have faith that God will bring justice."

Julio Zhingri said his daughter, who was born in Valhalla, was very smart and hardworking. She graduated with honors from Mahopac High School in 2008. She helped him establish his business, Amigo's Taxi in Ossining, he said.

Gloria worked for several years at Stone Meadow Kennels, a pet-boarding business in Mahopac.

"She was a meticulous, detailed employee," said owner Beth Hallett. "She is greatly missed."

The Zhingris are trying to get custody of their grandson, Anthony, now 18 months old. They said he is staying with his babysitter nearby, but they have not been allowed to see him.

"I have hope that we will get our grandson back," said Maria Zhingri. "He is our only grandchild."

"She was our only daughter," said Julio Zhingri. "He's all I have left of my daughter."

The parents both said they were working at the time of the incident and do not know if their grandson was in the house or who placed a call that prompted police to check on their daughter's well-being.

Putnam County Sheriff Donald Smith said they are not releasing information on the caller or if the baby was in the house at the time of the killing.

"The child is safe with a good family under Child Protective Services of Putnam County," he said.

The sheriff said the case is being investigated jointly by his office and Carmel police, and they've gotten help from Ossining and state police.

Amay remains in the Putnam County jail and is due in Carmel Town Court on Wednesday.

"We're confident we have a solid case," the sheriff said.

This is what the SECURE COMMUNITIES Program from DHS will get you. They dont deport until after someone is maimed, raped, or dead.

Carmel murder suspect had been awaiting deportation hearing

CARMEL, N.Y. -- The man accused in the Christmas Eve slaying of his wife had been freed on bond by federal immigration officials nine months earlier because he wasn't considered dangerous, an Immigrations and Customs Enforcement spokesman said Wednesday.

Paul Amay, 25, had been scheduled to go before an immigration judge next month when, police said, he stabbed and strangled 19-year-old Graciela Zhingri Amay at her parent's home. Amay, an Ecuadorean national who immigration officials said was in the country illegally, had been taken into custody by ICE after serving four months of a six-month sentence for driving drunk with his seven-month-old son in the car.

"He was arrested for a misdemeanor when we took him into custody, but he was bonded out," said ICE spokesman Ivan Delgado.

Amay was freed on $10,000 bond in March by an immigration officer in Manhattan on the same day he was detained.

The officer had the authority to decide whether a detainee should remain incarcerated, or could be released, either on bond or on his own recognizance, Delgado said.

"Our priority is the identification and removal of dangerous, convicted aliens," said Delgado. "He wasn't considered to be dangerous."

Amay now faces a charge of second-degree murder in his wife's death and is scheduled to appear in Carmel Town Court on Thursday.

He was arrested on Christmas Day in Ossining, N.Y., the day after Putnam County sheriff's deputies forced their way into his in-law's Agor Lane residence, where they found his wife dead on the floor.

Investigators said Amay strangled his wife outside the house, then dragged her inside and stabbed her in the chest.

Delgado said the deportation hearing has been postponed indefinitely as a result of Amay's arrest.
