UNC Protesters Want Hate Speech Policy and Charges Dropped

    CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -
UNC students and community members gathered in Chapel Hill Monday to push for charges to be dropped against six people who were arrested after protesting speakers at the university.

Students For a Democratic Society, which organized the April protests against Tom Tancredo, former congressman and republican presidential candidate, and Virgil Goode, a former independent state representative in Virginia, said it is opposed to what the two men stand for.

The Youth For Western Civilization invited Tancredo to speak back in April. The YWC is a national organization of students who are against mass immigration, multiculturalism and affirmative action. The group asked Tancredo to talk about his positoin on tuition and immigration.

During Tancredo's speech, protestors disrputed it by saying it was hate speech, shouting profanities, and broke a window. They also held a large banner in front of Tancredo to keep him from speaking to the crowd. Police used pepper spray after the window was broken. The next day, UNC's chancellor called Tancredo to apologize.

Six protesters were arrested at Goode's speech for disorderly conduct. Protesters said it was unnecessary and the university should support the students.

"Its a place where people should feel safe to be themselves and under-represented groups shouldn't feel that they have to be afraid when they walk around campus," said Haley Koch, one of the students arrested.

The SDS also said a hate speech policy is needed at UNC.

A September 14th court appearance is scheduled for those who were arrested.

    HAHAHA nice try!

The "underrepresented group here is the group who invited Tancredo. The man whom you denied free speech to. The Youth for Western Civilization should not have to fear "thug" tactics put on by this rabid group of spoiled rich kids.

    Right on Ratbstard !!

How many of the protesters and those arrested were UNC students ? I bet a lot of them are from outside UNC and the usual suspect Hispanic lobbyist groups such as La Raza..

Pretty clear to me that they are not remorseful, nor do the organizers see the error of their ways. Punish them! Make an example of them so the others will get the message.

Hypocrite! Tancredo and Goode should feel safe as well, but you participated in the disruption of their freedoms and created a threatening and hostile environment.
