Mexico’s consumer protection agency is beginning to offer financial advice to Mexican nationals living in the U.S. and returning to their native country.

Mexican officials believe that many of the homes in the U.S. are owned by immigrants. Their estimate is that more than 1.3 million Mexican citizens are home owners.

Some of them, officials said, are living in the U.S. unlawfully.

Mario DiCostanzo is the head of Mexico’s consumer protection agency. He said the government wants to make it as easy as possible for Mexicans who want to return or are forced to return.

That includes helping people get a power of attorney so that, if they’re deported, they can quickly transfer their home ownership.

DiCostanzo said the agency is offering services in the Mexican consulate in San Diego and will soon expand to Los Angeles, Dallas and other cities in the Southwest.
