A woman in the country illegally who was diagnosed with a pituitary tumor while under immigration detention was released on bond Thursday, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials said.
Sara Beltran Hernandez, 26, posted bond shortly after it was set by an immigration judge and was released from Prairieland Detention Center (PDC) in Alvarado, Texas.
Nidya Sarria, a spokeswoman for Amnesty International USA, told The Hill that Beltran would be picked up at PDC by her attorney, Fatma Marouf.
“Her family in New York is making arrangements for her to come home, pending a medical checkup to ensure that her medical condition will allow her to fly,” said Sarria.Beltran was taken from PDC to Huguley Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas, on Feb. 11, complaining of aggressive headaches.
On Feb. 22, Beltran was taken back to PDC against her wishes. Her lawyers claimed she had a brain tumor and had received improper care at the hospital.
Beltran's case received attention once she was returned to PDC from the hospital.
Activists have decried the case as an example of what they consider heavy-handed immigration enforcement under President Trump.
Her lawyers and relatives claimed Beltran had a brain tumor, information that ICE could not deny or confirm because of medical privacy laws. Beltran was referred to a specialist, who diagnosed her with a pituitary tumor Tuesday.
Beltran's lawyers claimed she was shackled while undergoing medical inspection at PDC, a claim ICE officials denied.
Beltran, a Salvadoran national, had been at PDC since Jan. 26, said ICE spokesman Carl Rusnok in an email.
She entered the country in November 2015 and has no criminal record, Rusnok said.
