Unknown when judge will rule on immigration law
Unknown when judge will rule on immigration law
July 7, 2010 2:59 pm
A federal judge hearing the six challenges to Arizona's new immigration law says she makes no promises on whether she'll rule on requests to block enforcement of the law before it takes effect July 29.
U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton says she intends to take the time required to make a sound legal decision.
The federal government filed a challenge to the law Tuesday, arguing the new law was an unconstitutional intrusion on Washington's power to regulate immigration.
Bolton rejected the federal government's proposed July 26 hearing date for hearing its request to block the law from taking effect.
The judge says the request didn't give her enough time to make a ruling and instead set a July 20 hearing.

Does anyone know for a fact if there is any limit on the amount of time a judge has to determine the outcome of a hearing?

Judge sets rules for hearing on SB1070

PHOENIX - A judge has set ground rules for the first major court hearing in a legal challenge to Arizona's new immigration law.
U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton is giving lawyers on each side 20 minutes on Thursday to make comments on Gov. Jan Brewer's request to throw out the challenge filed by Phoenix police Officer David Salgado.
Bolton also is giving lawyers on each side 30 minutes on Thursday to argue over the officer's request to put the law on hold and prevent it from taking effect on July 29.
The officer's lawyers argue that federal immigration law will trump the state law.
State officials say the challenge should be dismissed because the suits are based on mere speculation that the law will harm people.
