Construction Begins to Replace Border Wall in California
By ELLIOT SPAGAT, Associated Press
SAN DIEGO (AP) — The federal government began work Wednesday on replacing border wall in California, the first wall contract awarded in the Trump administration outside of eight prototypes that were built last year in San Diego.
Customs and Border Protection is replacing a little more than 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) in downtown Calexico, a sliver of the president's plan for a "big, beautiful wall" with Mexico. A barrier built in the 1990s from recycled metal scraps and landing mat will be torn down for bollard-style barriers that are 30 feet (9.1 meters) high, significantly taller than existing walls.
The administration is seeking $18 billion to extend the wall. Efforts to pay for it as part of a broader immigration package that would include granting legal status for people who came to the county as young children failed in the Senate last week.
In November, SWF Constructors of Omaha, Nebraska, won a contract for $18 million to replace wall in Calexico, about 120 miles (192 kilometers) east of San Diego. It encompasses an area bisected by the New River, where smugglers are known to guide people through polluted waters. The project, which includes a bridge over the river, is expected to take 300 days.
The administration cleared the way for construction in September by waiving dozens of environmental and other reviews in Calexico. A 2005 law exempted it from environmental reviews if the Homeland Security secretary deems a wall to be in national security interests, including the National Environmental Policy Act, Clean Air Act and Endangered Species Act.
The Trump administration has also issued waivers to build in San Diego and Santa Teresa, New Mexico. George W. Bush's administration issued the previous five waivers, allowing the government to quickly extend the wall to nearly one-third of the border without legal challenges that can block construction or cause major delays.
The state of California and major environmental advocacy groups have sued the administration over the waivers, saying its authority expired. U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel, who was taunted by Trump during the presidential campaign for his handling of fraud allegations against the now-defunct Trump University, is expected to rule soon on whether to allow the border wall lawsuit to go forward.

Border Wall Replacement Project Starts Near Downtown Calexico
Release Date:
February 21, 2018
CALEXICO, Calif. – Construction for a border wall replacement near downtown Calexico began today.
The area of the border wall replacement will be an approximately 2.25-mile section replaced with 30-foot high bollard style wall. The project covers an area from approximately the Calexico West Port of Entry extending westward beyond the Gran Plaza Outlets. The project also includes around 2.25 miles of all-weather roads.
The El Centro Sector wall replacement is one of Border Patrol’s highest priority projects. Wall in this area was built in the 1990s out of recycled scraps of metal and old landing mat. Although the existing wall has proven effective at deterring unlawful cross border activity, smuggling organizations damaged and breached this outdated version of a border wall several hundred times during the last two years, resulting in costly repairs.
El Centro Sector continues to experience a high number of apprehensions of illegal immigrants and drug smuggling. In fiscal year 2017, the El Centro Sector apprehended 18,633 illegal aliens, seized 5,554 pounds of marijuana, 483 pounds of cocaine, and 1,526 pounds of methamphetamine and 2,521 ounces of heroin. During that fiscal year, there were 21 assaults against El Centro Sector agents.
Leadership within the El Centro Sector has made great efforts to collaborate with local and state authorities to address any issues that may occur during the construction period. The Border Patrol works diligently with supporting agencies to ensure its presence minimally disturbs the surrounding environment and habitat.
The construction of a more substantial replacement wall will better ensure the safety of agents and the public and create a better atmosphere for business and commerce, all while enhancing overall border security.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.

FIRST Border Wall Contract Awarded – Wall Project Underway in Calexico
February 25, 2018 by Jim Hoft
The Trump administration awarded its first wall construction contract recently to SWF Constructors of Omaha, Nebraska.
SWF won the contract for the $18 million wall replacement project in Calexico.
The workers will replace a 1990s fence with a new 30-foot wall.
Here is video from last year of Mexicans jumping the old shorter wall into Calexico.

Thanks for the clarification. Maybe they should tear that crossing down and NOT rebuild it until the entire wall is done

That does not look like the 30 foot concrete barriers with the roll top on it.
Put spikes, razor blades or barb wire on top. Or all three.
Put a big roll of barb wire on the bottom on our side.
They get caught on it...call Mexico to get them off of it!ILLEGAL ALIENS HAVE "BROKEN" OUR IMMIGRATION SYSTEM
