Fugitive wanted for murder, kidnapping and racketeering captured in Mexico

A fugitive wanted for murder, kidnapping, and racketeering, was captured in Mexico and returned to the United States.

San Antonio FBI announced up to a $25,000 reward Feb. 26 for information leading to the arrest of Juan Alberto Mendez, 47. Mendez, an alleged associate of the Gulf Cartel, is wanted for his involvement in drug racketeering, including murder in aid of racketeering, between 2015 and 2018 in Indiana and Texas. Mendez was captured in Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, Mexico Aug. 1 and deported to the United States the next day.


The United States District Court for the Northern District of Indiana issued a federal arrest warrant Sept. 23, 2015 after Mendez was charged with conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute Schedule I controlled substance. Three years later the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas issued a federal arrest warrant May 11, 2018 after Mendez was charged with conspiracy to participate in racketeering activity, attempted murder in aid of racketeering, murder in aid of racketeering and kidnapping resulting in death.


Mendez appeared in federal court Monday in connection to the charges.
