(AFP) - A 26-year-old US man was shot dead in a taco restaurant in northwestern Mexico, a Mexican justice official said Thursday.

The official from Sinaloa state, the cradle of Mexico's drug trafficking industry, told AFP that family members had identified the victim as Christopher Elecnis Mandil, a musician from Arizona.

He had been dining with his girlfriend Wednesday in the state capital Culiacan when he was shot at point blank range by a man who fled on foot, the official added, without giving a possible motive for the crime.

The US embassy in Mexico City declined to comment.

Police found the bodies of three other men suspected to be victims of drug violence elsewhere in the city, the attorney general's office said.

The Pacific state is home to the powerful Sinaloa drug gang, one of a string of criminal organizations blamed for rising violence in Mexico.

More than 30,000 people have been killed in drug-related violence since December 2006, when President Felipe Calderon ordered a military crackdown on the country's powerful drug cartels. ... c_11257852

Not that I don't feel bad for the family of this person but when are Americans going to wake up and quit traveling to that war zone? You are putting you like in jeopardy crossing the border.

According to Fox news, the Mexican Tourism Board officials say nearly 820,000 people from destinations worldwide visited Mexico in June, up from 605,435 in June 2009. Of those visitors, the tourism board said, roughly 573,000 were from the United States, a 23 percent increase from the same period a year ago. Canadian visitors, meanwhile, skyrocketed more than 100 percent compared to the year before, up from 21,322 to more than 41,000.

MTB officials say cruise travel is also on the rise, as the number of American cruise passengers in the first four months of 2010 increased 6 percent compared to 2009 levels. Passengers from Canada also increased 9 percent from a year ago, MTB officials said. Mexican ports welcomed 5 million cruise passengers last year, and that figure is expected to reach nearly 6 million this year.
