Investigators with the Counter Narcotics Alliance busted what they called a marijuana stash house late Friday, seizing 1,700 pounds of pot and three vehicles and arresting a Mexican national.
Acting on a tip, investigators started surveillance and about 9 p.m., executed a search warrant on the West Side house, in the 2600 block of North Splitwood Avenue near West Grant and North Silverbell Roads.
"Our unit has been focusing more on stash-house investigations because of the increase in home invasions recently," said Sgt. Mark Morlock of the Arizona Department of Public Safety. "What's interesting with this one on Splitwood is last month just a couple doors down was a home invasion where they didn't get any drugs."
While investigators can't definitively link the earlier home invasion to the home in Friday's bust, Morlock said the increased focus should act as a deterrent.
Along with the seizure, authorities arrested Jorge Antonio Cervantes-Garcia, a 28-year-old Mexican illegally in the United States, Morlock said. Cervantes-Garcia, of Hermosillo, was booked into the Pima County jail on suspicion of possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana for sale and possession of drug paraphernalia. He remained in jail on $500,000 bond.
The bust was the third raid of suspected stash houses in a week for the Counter Narcotics Alliance, all the result of anonymous tips, Morlock said.
On Monday, investigators found 500 pounds of marijuana in a house in the 5100 block of West Lazy C Drive, near North Camino de Oeste and West Sweetwater Drive.
On Jan. 12, alliance detectives found 300 pounds of pot, two weapons and $5,000 cash inside a home in the 6300 block of South Avenida Don Arturo, near Valencia Road and Camino de Oeste.
Entrants in Rio Rico house
In another investigation, nearly three dozen illegal entrants were discovered Wednesday in a drop house by Border Patrol agents working in Rio Rico.
The bust occurred after agents saw a truck dropping off suspected illegal entrants at the home. When the agents approached the house, they found 34 illegal entrants. At the same time, agents stopped the truck and found the driver was in the country illegally.
In November, a drop house in Rio Rico with 109 illegal entrants inside was busted. A month later, another house with 26 illegal entrants was found.
