Release Date: May 9, 2020

YUMA, Ariz. – On Thursday evening, Wellton Border Patrol agents apprehended a group of seven illegal aliens found a backpack containing fentanyl pills. One of the subjects admitted ownership of the pills.

At approximately 11:30 p.m., Wellton Station Target Enforcement Unit (TEU) agents apprehended a group of seven illegal aliens near the Camp Grip Forward Operating Base west of Lukeville, Arizona. While searching the area, agents discovered a backpack containing a small package of pills. The packaging for the pills was a rolled material covered in tape. The fentanyl pills weighed 212 grams with an approximate street value of $5,500.

A 54-year-old Mexican National male in the group admitted ownership of the fentanyl. The pills were seized for destruction, and transported to the Wellton Border Patrol Station. The illegal aliens were processed according to Yuma Sector guidelines.

Fentanyl is an extremely toxic substance to handle in addition to being a dangerous narcotic to use. Agents need to be extremely careful when confronted with this substance, which again demonstrates the risk U.S. Border Patrol agents face performing their daily duties.
