USBP Arrest 3 Smugglers, Seize Meth
USBP Arrest 3 Smugglers, Seize Meth
Release Date: September 15, 2020
TECATE, Calif. — U.S. Border Patrol agents arrested three male Mexican nationals on Sunday who brought bundles of methamphetamine into the U.S.
The incident began on September 13 at approximately 10 p.m., near Tecate. While on patrol in an area with no border wall, an agent observed three men carrying backpacks traversing down a steep hillside.
Calling for backup help, another agent responded to the area. When the three men with backpacks saw the agents, they began to run northbound, crossing Highway 94.
One of the men abandoned his backpack while crossing the highway. A passing vehicle struck the pack and white powder was spread over the roadway. While agents were pursuing the men, a California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) Hazmat team responded to the scene to clean up the unknown powder.
After a brief pursuit, and with the help of a canine detection team, USBP agents located and detained the men. Checking their backpacks, they found plastic-wrapped bundles that tested positive for methamphetamine.
The meth bundles weighed 89.25 pounds and have an estimated street value of $223,125.
The three men and the meth were turned over the Drug Enforcement Administration.
“The actions taken by these smugglers demonstrate their blatant disregard for public safety.” Said Chief Patrol Agent Aaron M. Heitke. “Thanks to the professionalism and dedication of our agents on the frontline, this dangerous drug will not reach any community in our country.”
Since October 1, 2019, San Diego Sector Border Patrol Agents have seized more than 7,028 pounds of meth, which accounts for 36 percent of all methamphetamine seized by the Border Patrol along the southwest border.
To prevent the illicit smuggling of humans, drugs, and other contraband, the U.S. Border Patrol maintains a high level of vigilance on corridors of egress away from our Nation’s borders. To report suspicious activity to the U.S. Border Patrol, contact San Diego Sector at (619) 498-9900.
