ACLU doesn't want Shurtleff to prosecute anyone on 'the list'

SALT LAKE CITY -- The American Civil Liberties Union and several other groups have sent a letter to Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff, asking him not to go after anyone on a purported list of illegal immigrants.

Marina Lowe, legislative and policy counsel for the ACLU, says Shurtleff should stick to his original position.

"He stated initially that [the list] was a severe breach of privacy and it appears the law has been broken. In his second response, he said his office would be perhaps looking into some of the Social Security numbers listed to see if there were any state crimes violations," Lowe says.

She says it would be inappropriate to use any information from the list because it was obtained illegally, and the attorney general should not benefit from it.

Lowe also says the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials have promised not to use information from the list for an investigation.

A spokesman for the attorney general says his office will have not comment until after the investigation into the list is complete.

If they were on the list you would think they could get them for
welfare fraud at the least
