Utah troops based in Texas, not directly dealing with border

Utah troops based in Texas, not directly dealing with border

(KUTV) -- Thousands of troops are heading to the border and while there are currently 16 Utah National Guardsmen based there, they won’t be dealing directly with the migrant situation.

An additional 12 guardsmen are also assisting them from Utah. The 28 have been in training for weeks to assist the Texas National Guard. They are expected to officially start their mission next week.

Their function is purely administrative and they were briefed several weeks ago. They’ll be analyzing data to help keep federal agencies such as Homeland Security, safer.

They could be down there for up to a year.

According to Major General Jeff Burton, the 16 in Texas are nowhere near the border and even if tensions escalate there in the coming days, our troops won’t be seeing any action.
