HARRISONBURG - Harrisonburg Police arrested a city man Saturday and charged him with malicious wounding in the shooting of a woman earlier in the day.

Police say that Jose Raul Billalobos Cornejo, 34, left the unidentified woman with a gunshot wound to the leg early Saturday morning.

Cornejo and the woman know each other, police say, but the nature of their relationship could not be confirmed by press time Sunday night.

    Shots Fired

Police responded to the 500 block of Viewmont Court on Saturday after receiving a call for shots fired at 2 a.m. When they arrived, officers found the victim, who had been shot once in the leg. She was taken to Rockingham Memorial Hospital and later transferred to the University of Virginia Medical Center. Police say her wound was not life-threatening.

Arrested a short time after the shooting, Cornejo was charged with malicious wounding, possession of a firearm while not being a U.S. citizen, and use of a firearm in commission of a felony, according to a statement released by police.

It was unclear at press time whether Cornejo is an illegal alien, or in this country legally.
