Joe Murray: Why The 2008 Election Will Be A Referendum On Immigration
By: Joe Murray , The Bulletin

With the dust settling in Ames, Iowa, and the field of presidential candidates to be decreased by at least one - former Wisconsin governor Tommy Thompson pledged to pull out of the race if he did not place first or second - it is clear that Mitt Romney is on cloud 9.

Capturing 31 percent of the vote, Team Romney has secured its seat in the first tier and has already begun to beat the drum that the former Massachusetts governor is the conservative candidate of choice. If one reads between the lines, Romney's camp is subtly trying to shrink the second tier to eliminate any competition this winter.

But can it be said that Romney's straw poll victory was a true victory? With $21 million raised last quarter, a presence in each of Iowa's 99 counties, an unchallenged advertising blitz that has saturated Iowa airwaves, and 17 visits to the Hawkeye State, is 31 percent a real victory? When David beats Goliath, it is clear that a victory is at hand, but can the same be said when Goliath stomps on David?

There is no doubt that Romney met expectations by winning the non-binding contest and was able to harness some political momentum as his campaign readies to battle Giuliani and former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson.

But the real story of the 2007 Iowa Straw Poll resides not with its winner but with those who placed second, third, and fourth.

Traditionally, the Iowa Straw Poll becomes a boneyard for presidential hopefuls. In 1999, a poor showing at the poll buried the presidential aspirations of Lamar Alexander, Dan Quayle and Elizabeth Dole. The results also forced Pat Buchanan to leave the GOP to pursue the Reform Party nomination.

This year, though, things are different. With only 626 votes separating second place (Mike Huckabee) from fourth place (Tom Tancredo), the Straw Poll has injected a great deal of energy and momentum into these second-tier campaigns vying for first-tier status, making it evident that the big winner in Ames is Tancredo.

Going into Ames, nobody expected Tancredo to do well. His campaign is underfunded, has a scattered presence in the state and has been dwarfed by the Romney juggernaut. Tancredo, though, did not give up and kept traveling from town to town bringing his message to anyone who would listen.

What is his message? Tancredo is one of the few men running for president who understands both the physical and cultural threat an unsecured border poses to our nation. While Romney was employing illegal aliens and Brownback was signing off on Kennedy-McCain amnesty, Tancredo was a lone voice defending America's right to protect her cultural integrity.

"In 36 counties with more than 500,000 residents each, non-Hispanic whites are now a minority, up from 29 counties of that size in 2000," writes Sam Roberts in the New York Times. "From 2005 to 2006 alone, eight other mostly less-populous counties shifted to a majority of minorities, the Census Bureau said. They were Denver; East Baton Rouge Parish, La.; Winkler, Waller and Wharton in Texas; Blaine, Mont.; Colfax, N.M.; and Manassas Park, Va., an independent city that is considered the equivalent of a county."

In his five-year study titled, "E Pluribus Unum: Diversity and Community in the 21st Century," Harvard political scientist Robert Putnam explains, "People living in ethnically diverse settings appear to 'hunker down,' that is, to pull in like a turtle." This scenario is not good.

Those who segregate themselves by their ethnicity, failing to assimilate into the American culture, "withdraw even from close friends, to expect the worst from their community and its leaders, to volunteer less, give less to charity and work on community projects less often, to register to vote less, to agitate for social reform more but have less faith they can actually make a difference, and to huddle unhappily in front of the television," writes Putnam.

This is why Tancredo's campaign is surging while others are failing.
During his straw poll speech, Tancredo decried the ethnic chauvinism that is prevalent in new Hispanic immigrants and warned the party faithful that "we are watching the Balkanization of our country." This past Saturday, the voters in Ames let it be known that they will not lose their country without a fight.

No, the MSM and Globalists will make sure Ron Paul and Tancredo do not win... that is why us supporters must be HUGE in our opposition and getting the word out.

Right now, they have Romney, Ghouliani and Hucklebee speaking tough on illegal immigration.. and they are ALL SHILLS for the Federal Reserve bank etc... They will NOT pass true reform. trust me...

Tancredo believes in the same thing we all believe in. He does not waiver from his convictions. That is why he is the best for America!
We are NOT a nation of immigrants!
