MI: Illegal alien arraigned in officer's traffic death

Man arraigned in officer's traffic death
Posted by Kim Crawford August 29, 2007 06:47AM

INDEPENDENCE TWP. -- As second shift Flint police officers donned "mourning bands" Tuesday afternoon in honor of one of their own killed in a traffic crash Sunday evening, an Oakland County man was charged in the case.

Family and friends of Flint police Officer Vincent D'Anna watched grimly as Ramon Felix Pineda, 25, was arraigned before Oakland County District Judge Kelley Kostin in Clarkston. Kostin ordered Pineda, an illegal alien from Mexico who has lived in the U.S. for 12 years, held without bond in the Oakland County Jail.

Pineda is charged with second-degree murder -- a felony punishable by up to life in prison; operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated causing death, a 15-year felony; failing to stop at the scene of a serious injury accident causing death, punishable by a five-year prison term; and driving while license suspended, a misdemeanor.

Pineda stood mute on the charges, which has the same effect as a plea of not guilty in terms of the case against him proceeding. He is accused of striking D'Anna's motorcycle from behind with the 1992 Camaro he was driving on Sashabaw Road near the DTE Energy Music Theatre near Clarkstson and then physically running over and dragging D'Anna for 70 feet.

Pineda was tackled and held by witnesses when he tried to run away from the scene; witnesses also lifted the car off D'Anna, 26, of Goodrich, who died hours later at Genesys Regional Medical Center.

Pineda later told Oakland County Sheriff's Department investigators he had consumed seven beers before driving that evening, Lt. James Ahearn testified Tuesday, swearing out the warrant on which Pineda was charged.

Ahearn told the judge that after he'd been read his Miranda rights, Pineda told investigators that "he panicked and attempted to flee" after initially striking D'Anna's motorcycle. When he accelerated, trying to get away, he dragged D'Anna, fatally injuring him.

Ramon Pineda: Why Was Illegal Alien Cop-Killer Here 12 Years? How Did He Get Driver's License?

    By Debbie Schlussel

On Tuesday, illegal alien Ramon Felix Pineda was arraigned in the Detroit suburb of Clarkston on charges of second-degree murder, drunken driving, leaving the scene of an accident, and driving on a suspended license. Pineda, 25, has been here illegally (from Mexico) for at least 12 years.

The man Pineda killed was Vincent D'Anna, age 26, an off-duty Flint, Michigan police officer, who was rear-ended by Penda and later died. But it's even more brutal than that:

He is accused of striking D'Anna's motorcycle from behind with the 1992 Camaro he was driving on Sashabaw Road near the DTE Energy Music Theatre near Clarkston and then physically running over and dragging D'Anna for 70 feet.

Pineda was tackled and held by witnesses when he tried to run away from the scene; witnesses also lifted the car off D'Anna, 26, of Goodrich, who died hours later at Genesys Regional Medical Center.

Since Pineda was here illegally, one wonders why the Michigan Secretary of State ever gave him a driver's license (which was suspended), in the first place. I'll tell you why. Despite her tough-talking, current Michigan Secretary of State, Republican Terry Lynn Land, allows any alien--legal or not--to get a driver's license.

I know that because, in researching this, I recently called the Secretary of State's office to find out how to get a driver's license for a non-citizen. I was told that all you need to show are bills or some other proof of residence, and--if you don't have a social security number--fill out a form that's later sent to the federal government (and probably sent to a "circular file" never to be looked at again).

That's why illegal aliens living around the country flock to Michigan Secretary of State offices to get driver's licenses.

And many of them feel quite safe living in Michigan. That's because they won't be bothered from their good American life by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Special Agent in Charge Brian Moskowitz a/k/a "Abu Moskowitz." Pineda was here illegally since age 13, which likely means he was brought here by parents, who are also here illegally. Where are they? Did Moskowitz ask his agents to track them down? Don't count on it.

And people die because of this inaction. People like Vincent D'Anna, an off duty cop on a motorcycle, whose life was cut short at age 26.

This could have been prevented. But we haven't gotten nearly tough enough on illegal aliens. Easy access to driver's licenses. Easy living in the U.S. for 12 years. When will it end? What will it take?

Here is a dead officer, killed by a drunk illegal alien driver. Yet, Fox News has been fixated on Hulk Hogan's son in a car crash. Needless to say, I am angry.
