MASSACHUSETTS : Illegal Alien Charged in Hit-And-Run Death

Illegal Immigrant Charged in Hit-And-Run Death of 23-Year-Old Massachusetts Man

    Published August 24, 2011 | FoxNews.com

An illegal immigrant who allegedly killed a 23-year-old Massachusetts man in a hit-and-run accident Saturday is being held on $100,000 cash bail, the Milford Daily News reports.

Nicolas D. Guaman, 34, of Milford, Mass., was arrested Saturday after his vehicle struck Matthew J. Denice, who was on a motorcycle, according to police. Guaman's pickup truck had allegedly dragged Denice's body a quarter-mile, the newspaper reports.

Judge Robert Calagione entered a not guilty plea on behalf of Guaman in Milford District Court on Tuesday.

Michael Maloney, Denice's stepfather, is reportedly calling the accident a "murder." He described Denice, who had just graduated from Framingham State University with a computer degree, as a "great all-American kid," according to the newspaper.

Police in Milford confirmed that Guaman was in the country illegally, and Denice's family has called for him to receive a lengthy sentence in the U.S., rather than simply being deported.

Guaman is accused of negligent vehicular homicide while driving under the influence of liquor, leaving the scene of an accident involving personal injury and death, possession of an open container of alcohol in a vehicle and unlicensed driving, among other charges.

If found guilty of vehicular homicide, he could get up to 15 years in jail, the newspaper reports.

The following letter was sent by state Sen. Richard T. Moore (D-Uxbridge) to Gov. Deval Patrick on Monday:

    Dear Governor Patrick:

Something MUST be done about drivers operating without licenses! This weekend, Milford was the scene of a horrific crash that took the life of a terrific young man. Matthew Denice, age 23, a recent graduate of Framingham State University who worked his way through college, was killed in one of the grizzliest events on the highways in recent years!

I will not call the event an "accident." When a man who is reported to be under the influence and driving without a license ran over and dragged Matthew Denice, refusing to stop and ran from the scene, it is clear that the streets are not safe! The accused — Nicolas Dutan Guaman — is reported to be an illegal alien. Sadly, he is not the first illegal alien to be driving without a license and, in all probability, without driver training. What will the Patrick-Murray Administration do to support local and state police to make our streets safe?

Fortunately, in this case, it appears that the Immigration and Customs Enforcement will help to prevent the accused from fleeing to a country out of our reach so that he can stand trial for vehicular homicide and a long list of related crimes. While it's not clear that the Secure Communities Program would have helped to prevent this tragedy, your agreeing to enlist Massachusetts in the program would, at least, be official recognition that we must take steps to protect the public from those who flout the law.

I would urge you in the strongest possible terms to put your Administration behnd efforts to take seriously, the need to enforce our traffic laws, and to make our streets safe in Massachusetts. The people of Milford are in shock and mourning over the senseless loss of a promising young life. Once again, what can be done to assure the people of Milford — and Massachusetts — feel safe on their roads and in their neighborhoods?

    Sincerely,

    Richard T. Moore

Moore is state senator representing the Worcester and Norfolk district.

Gov. Deval Patrick’s stand on illegals is indefensible

It’s going to take some politician’s kid getting killed by a drunken illegal alien before the hacks finally figure out that there’s a mighty big problem here.

You know what happened in Milford on Saturday night. A totally smashed illegal from Ecuador is accused of running a stop sign and mowing down a 23-year-old American on a motorcycle, and then proceeding to drag him, screaming, under his truck for a quarter mile.

When the illegal finally ran off the road, the American became disentangled. He was still alive. But then the illegal backed his truck back over him, according to prosecutors.

Told later he’d killed the young man, Matthew J. Denice, cops say the illegal shrugged.

At his first appearance in court Monday, Nicolas Guaman needed a translator, even though he’s been in the country for five years. Apparently he’s picked up at least a bit of our lingo along the line — in the cab of the truck, cops found cans of Budweiser cerveza, which he was somehow able to purchase.

    Bruce: Government responsible for death

    MILFORD —

My high school classmate's blood is still fresh on the streets of downtown Milford. It might as well be on the hands of Gov. Patrick, Registrar Kaprielian, and Attorney General Coakley. Matthew Denice's death was entirely preventable had we only enforced our nation's laws.

This country, and especially this Commonwealth, needs to wake up and hold our elected officials responsible for their unpatriotic, unlawful, and despicable policies.

    MICHAEL BRUCE,

I am starting to wonder that myself.

I posted 3 incidents just from the last day. My local paper prints about 4 or 5 Illegal Alien hit and runs a year but it refuses to tie them together.

Currently it's impossible for a Mod or Admin to split a post and add it to the original post of the topic. If our regular posters would just check if the subject has already been posted and add to that thread it might be possible.

It would be possible to make a sticky as a collection of similar incidents but they couldn't be combined and added to the HP.

No, we cannot combine articles for one homepage article. Only option is to put each one on the homepage separately.
