Here’s a group that’s even angrier than Fox and Friends about the Associated Press’s decision this week to drop the term “illegal immigrant” from its style guide.
The Americans for Legal Immigration political action committee, which is neither a traditional news publication nor a reliable source of independently verified information, said Wednesday that it will adopt the term “illegal invader” in its communications to replace “illegal immigrant.”
The organization called AP’s move “totalitarian.” AP, one of the world’s largest newsgathering operations, is a not-for-profit cooperative that controls zero out of three branches of the U.S. government.
ALIPAC’s decision regarding the controversial term will probably not make as much of an impact as AP’s among writers and editors seeking to find balanced and nuanced language to describe illegal immigration. ALIPAC’s press release announcing the move contained two exclamation points and three instances of the expression “with the stroke of a pen.”
AP struck the term “illegal immigrant” from its style guide Tuesday, saying it wanted to eschew sweeping and potentially inaccurate labels. The move marked a major victory for Latino media organizations and immigrant advocates who had long pressured the AP to drop the term, which many Hispanics and immigrants view as offensive because it criminalizes the person rather than their actions.
