BROOKS COUNTY -

Deputies discovered an old barn on a federally owned property has once again becoming a pass through home to illegal immigrants.

The structure is off 281 South just north of the Falfurrias rest area. A trail of clothes and other items are evidence that the building is being used again. A path runs from the gate to the abandoned building.

This property is owned by the feds, but it is hard to tell by looking at it.

Brooks County Sheriff's Deputy Eloy Galvan said even he forgets that it is federal land.

The building is secured by some old rusty locks. Galvan stopped by over the weekend to check on the property.
He said, “We found loose clothing, gallons of waters, and even gun casings.” One of the water containers had a manufactured date of Dec. 2014. Also, new graffiti was found inside.

Galvan said the change in ownership of the property did not change anything that happens there.

The land will continue to be used by cartels and smugglers. Only constant surveillance could curb the problem.
“We don't have the man power. We try the best we can to stop that,” said the deputy.

Debris left behind by those crossing the border illegally will continue to pile up, even on properties the feds have declared problematic.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS reached out to the Homeland Security Investigators Office in Houston about this property and are waiting to hear back. We will let you know what their plans are for this problem property.
