This isn't technically news and yet when I see reasonable common sense letters to editors of newspapers I think it's worth posting.

Voter immigration message was clear

Nov. 23, 2006 12:00 AM

Arizonans resoundingly passed on Nov. 7 all four "anti-immigrant" propositions widely decried as unable to stop illegal immigration.

Had the proposition requiring police to enforce immigration laws not been torpedoed by the courts, we would have passed that one, too. To illustrate how out of touch our leadership is, Gov. Janet Napolitano publicly denounced state Rep. Russell Pearce, R-Mesa, as not speaking for Arizonans, yet he championed these proposals.

Immigration is the 500-pound gorilla in the room. Politicians are afraid to seriously address the crisis in a political environment where Latino activists are instantly outraged by anything they consider anti-immigrant, but the majority of Americans are disgusted by the shameful inaction and are desperate to vote for anything that may help, even if it is largely symbolic.

Politicians ignore this message at their own peril.
