Governor Joe Manchin has vetoed a bill that included a controversial amendment that designated English as the official language of West Virginia. The governor vetoed the bill Saturday and then lawmakers passed the measure without the amendment.

Manchin used a controversial provision that allows him to veto bills that deter from a single object. Supporters of English-only tacked the amendment on a bill dealing with parks and recreation boards.

Manchin tells MetroNews he can understand both sides of the English-only argument, but there's a way the state can deal with the issue without passing a law. "We have to be sensitive and show we are open and are willing to adjust," Manchin says.

The governor adds the state should not be forced to have additional expenses by providing governmental items in different languages. He believes there's a way to do both. "The printing costs today can be offset by what's put on computers." Manchin says the state can accommodate people with technology.

Governor Manchin was a sponsor of a similar bill introduced in the 1980s while a member of the state Senate. He says that was a different time, "It was more of a time when we were of a government in our own confines, but now we are a global economy with businesses like Toyota."

I can't believe his last statement! It's people like him that are toxic to the well being of our country.

Who wants to bet that this is Manchin's last term and if he runs for reelection he loses?
