Police are searching for at least one shooter, and are sweeping stores in the mall, Sgt. Mark Francis said.

"Please avoid Cascade Mall area in Burlington," Francis said. " Follow all road closures."

BREAKING: Police in Washington state were searching for at least one gunman Friday evening after at least four people were shot and killed at a mall north of Seattle.

Washington State Patrol spokesman Sgt. Mark Francis told KCPQ that the victims were shot inside the Macy's store at the Cascade Mall in Burlington shortly before 7 p.m. local time.

Francis tweeted that the suspect was described as a Hispanic male wearing gray who was last seen walking toward Interstate 5.

Francis added that there may be more shooters and police were in the process of clearing the mall.

It was not immediately clear whether there had been any non-fatal injuries. Francis told KCPQ that authorities had to clear the mall before EMS personnel could enter the building.

Authorities have closed all access roads and streets surrounding the mall until further notice.

Burlington is located approximately 65 miles north of Seattle. The Cascade Mall is an enclosed shopping mall in Burlington,
Washington that opened in 1990, according to the mall's website. It features J.C. Penney, TJ Maxx, and Macy's stores, among other stores, restaurants and a movie theater.

Police were searching for a gunman who killed four women and a man at a Washington state mall Friday before fleeing the area.
Washington State Patrol spokesman Sgt. Mark Francis said police were searching for a Hispanic man wearing black and armed with a rifle who was last seen walking toward Interstate 5 near the Cascade Mall in Burlington.

"Stay indoors, stay secure," Francis said at a news conference.
The male victim was airlifted to a Seattle hospital with critical injuries. Washington State Patrol Trooper Heather Axtman told "Fox & Friends" Saturday morning that the man had died.

Authorities initially said four people were killed, then said three were dead, before revising the number again late Friday. Francis said the number fluctuated as authorities searched the 434,000-square-foot mall. The sergeant said the victims were shot in the makeup department of the mall's Macy's store at approximately 7 p.m. local time.

Authorities released a surveillance image of the suspect walking through the store and holding a rifle. Francis said police did not know the gunman's motive and could not say whether he targeted the victims. He said the ages of the victims appeared to range from their 20s to elderly, but had no further identifying information.
Washington Gov. Jay Inslee said in a statement that many questions remain but state patrol and local law enforcement are on the scene working swiftly to locate the shooter and clear the area.

"Trudi and I send our condolences to the families of the victims and prayers for anyone injured," Inslee said. "We urge residents to heed all safety and detour warnings. Stay close to your friends and loved ones as we await more information and, hopefully, news of the suspect's capture."

The FBI's Seattle office announced that it was assisting local investigators with intelligence reviews and manpower. The bureau said on Twitter that it "has no information to suggest additional attacks planned" in Washington state but did not elaborate.

Tari Caswell told the Skagit Valley Herald she was in the Macy's women's dressing room when she heard "what sounded like four balloons popping."

"Then I heard seven or eight more, and I just stayed quiet in the dressing room because it just didn't feel right. And it got very quiet. And then I heard a lady yelling for help, and a man came and got me and another lady, and we ran out of the store," Caswell told the newspaper.

Stephanie Bose, an assistant general manager at Johnny Carino's Italian restaurant near Macy's, told the Associated Press she immediately locked the doors to the restaurant after hearing about the shooting from an employee's boyfriend.

"He was trying to go to the mall and people were screaming," she said. "It was frantic."

She said he could see police at the doors with assault rifles and said they were no longer guarding the doors as of 9:30 p.m. local time.

Authorities have closed all access roads and streets surrounding the mall until further notice. Visitors and workers who were released from the mall after being locked down were taken to a nearby church to meet their loved ones.

BURLINGTON, Wash. -- A 20-year-old man was arrested Saturday in the shooting at a Burlington mall that left five people dead.

The man was arrested in Oak Harbor before 7 p.m. Saturday, about 24 hours after the shooting at Cascade Mall that left four females and one male dead.

A highly-placed source tells KING 5 News that there is no apparent connection between the suspect and the victims, leading to the possibility this was a random attack.

Mount Vernon Police Lt. Chris Cammock said earlier Saturday the female victims' ages ranged from teens to seniors. There was no information on the age of the male victim. No identifications have been released.


Authorities say the shooter initially entered the shopping center without a weapon, but 10 minutes later, went to the cosmetics counter inside Macy's with a rifle and opened fire for about one minute. He then laid his rifle on the counter and walked away.

Cammock said authorities recovered the weapon from the scene. He described it as a "hunting-type" rifle. He said officers are reconstructing the entire scene at the Cascade Mall in Burlington, scanning for evidence.

Michael Knutson, assistant special agent in charge of the Seattle FBI, said at the news conference there was no evidence to point to terrorism.

More than 200 officers from more than two dozen agencies responded and painstaking searched the over 400,000-square-foot mall.

Burlington Mayor Steve Sexton said it's now important for the community to come together and support one another.

"I think Burlington is still a very safe place to live it's just something that visited our doorstep and it's very uncommon that we have this type of tragedy on our area and our law enforcement does a very good job in keeping people safe," said Sexton.

Authorities arrested a man Saturday night in connection with the shooting at a mall in Burlington, Wash., that left five people dead.

Washington State Patrol identified the suspect as Arcan Cetin, 20, of Oak Harbor, Wash. Cetin was taken into custody at around 7 p.m. PT in Oak Harbor, about 29 miles southwest of Burlington.

A 20-year-old Turkish immigrant was arrested Saturday in the murders of five people in a Washington state shopping mall, authorities said.

Multiple tips and video footage of the suspect’s vehicle outside the mall led police to Arcan Cetin, who was was arrested near his home in Oak Harbor, Wash., 28 miles southwest of the crime scene.

Meanwhile, the first details were released on the victims. The youngest was a cancer survivor and high school senior. She was just 16 years old.

Officers of the Island County Sheriff’s Office said they were driving through Oak Harbor in search of Cetin when they spotted him walking on the street about 6:30 p.m.
“We both jumped out with our guns drawn and detained him,” said Lt. Mike Hawley, who called Cetin “zombie-like.”

“He didn’t run,” Hawley said.

The suspect was unarmed, said the officer, and was carrying a computer and some personal items in a bag. The weapon believed to have been used in the murders was recovered in the mall.

Cetin’s motive remained unclear Saturday night.

His Facebook page says he attended Oak Harbor High School and bagged groceries at the Whidbey Island Commissary, which serves area Navy families.

Mall video shows Cetin allegedly initially walked into the Cascade Mall in Burlington, Wash., Friday night unarmed. He apparently left, but soon returned with a tote bag big enough to hold a disassembled rifle.

In all, he spent just 10 minutes in the mall.

The youngest victim was named by the Seattle Times as Sarai Lara, 16, who survived cancer as a young girl.

Her mother said Sarai was a happy, driven and responsible student.

The victims ranged in age from a teenager to seniors, police said.

Victims of the Washington Mall Shooting Have Been Identified

One of them was a teenage cancer survivor.

On Friday, September 23, a lone shooter opened fire at the Cascade Mall in Burlington, Washington. Police have arrested the suspect in the shooting, 20-year-old Arcan Cetin, last night near his home. Five people were killed in the shooting, and names of the victims have been released to the public as the community grieves over this devastating loss.

One of the victims was 16-year-old Sarai Lara who attended high school in Mount Vernon, Washington. Sarai had battled cancer as a young girl and had since recovered. Sarai was shopping at the mall with her mother and sister on Friday night, and they split up to look in different stores. She was in Macy's by herself when the shooting broke out.

Sarai's friends described her as extremely strong and trust-worthy. One of her friends spoke to KOMO News and explained, "She was a strong girl, she told me a lot about her life and I trusted her with everything. She gave me advice and helped me through a lot." She was described by her mother Evangelina as a "happy, responsible, and driven student."

A mother and daughter were also among the victims of the shooting. Belinda Galde, 64, was at the mall with her mother, Beatrice Dotson, 95; both women were killed. Belinda had been an employee of the Snohomish County District Court since 1989, and was described by her co-workers as "amazingly kind and caring."

A third victim is believed to be a makeup artist who worked at Macy's, named Shayla Martin.Shayla wasn't named by officials, but her family received news from witnesses that she was among the dead. She was described by her sister as "so sweet" and "very independent."

The fifth victim was Chuck Eagan, who was at the mall with his wife. According to Chuck's aunt, Carol Thrush, Chuck was with his wife in Macy's when the gunfire broke out. His wife had fallen down, and Chuck was shot as he bent to help her. Chuck was a Boeing maintenance worker and planned to retire in the next year. He was a father to two daughters.

In the hours and days since the shooting, the community has banded together to remember those who were lost. Approximately 50 community members gathered at the Central United Methodist Church in Sedro-Woolley, Washington on Saturday evening, where they lit candles and offered their prayers for the five victims.

After a 20-hour manhunt, the man authorities believe killed five people at the Cascade Mall in Washington state has been captured — and if his motive isn’t officially known yet, at least one of his heroes is, and it’s disturbing.

According to CNN, Arcan Cetin, a 20-year-old naturalized immigrant from Turkey, said nothing after he was arrested Saturday night. However, in determining a motive, what he put on social media said an awful lot.

Take, for instance, Cetin’s Tumblr page. On it, he had a picture of his “main dude” Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of the Islamic State group.

Now, if this were just an average person with no connection to a shooting, posting “subhan Allah” — or, “Glory be to God” — would probably be something like the person on your Facebook feed who puts those “Don’t scroll down until you type ‘Amen!'” pictures of Jesus. (If you are one of those people, I am so, so sorry, and please accept my humblest apologies. But maybe cut back on the posts a little bit.)

So, what did mainstream media stalwart CNN have to say about Cetin’s arrest?

“State authorities said it’s too early to rule out terrorism or any other motive because their investigation is in its preliminary stages. Before the suspect’s arrest, an official with the FBI had told reporters there was ‘no evidence at this time’ of a link to terrorism.”

CNN, of course, has access to the same information that we have about the Cascade Mall shooter. Its reporters and editors go on the same internet that we do. If they want to further verify those pictures, they have the resources to do so.

Instead, there wasn’t even mention of unverified posts praising al-Baghdadi or terrorism. Religion wasn’t mentioned either, although CNN did quote an incorrect original report that the suspect was Hispanic. The network devoted about as much space and time to police trying to figure out where Cetin got the gun as it did to the possibility of terrorism.

These are the priorities of the media. When a shooting has all the hallmarks of a terror attack, they close their eyes, ears and mouths, and hope to high heaven that it isn’t one. That’s not objectivity, and it makes us less safe.

The Turkish immigrant accused of gunning down five people at a Washington mall smirked at his first court appearance Monday even as reports revealed he had a blog with photo posts of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei.

Accused shooter Arcan Cetin, smirking slightly and wearing a blue, collared shirt, appeared for his first court appearance late Monday morning. Charged with five counts of premeditated murder, Cetin was held on $2 million bail. He only spoke twice, both times to answer "yes, your honor" to a judge's question.

Authorities said they have not ruled out terrorism as a motive in the shooting at the Cascade Mall in Burlington. Police arrested Cetin on Saturday evening after a nearly day-long manhunt. He was described as being “zombie-like” when he was taken into custody.

Cetin told detectives he was responsible for the mall murders, according to court documents released Monday.

A 20-year-old legal U.S. resident, Cetin appeared to have two blogs on Tumblr that linked to each other, and one of which linked to his Twitter account, according to The Associated Press. Aside from the posts featuring noted Islamists, Cetin’s blogs also featured posts about serial killer Ted Bundy and the Area 51 test site.

Cetin’s alleged rampage lasted about one minute, authorities said.

Officials believe he used a rifle that was recovered at the scene before fleeing the mall in a car.

Court records show Cetin had previously faced three charges of assaulting his stepfather, The Seattle Times reported. Cetin also was arrested on drunken driving charges. No details were given on when the arrests took place or how the cases may have been resolved.

In the assault case, Cetin was told by a judge last December that he was not to possess a gun, The Times reported.

The Washington mall shooting comes amid a spate of mall attacks throughout the U.S.

On Sept. 17, a 20-year-old man stabbed 10 people at a Minnesota mall before being shot and killed by an off-duty police officer.

Authorities said they are investigating the attack by Dahir Ahmed Adan as a possible act of terrorism. On Monday, nine people were wounded when a man opened fire near a Houston strip mall. Police said the gunman, who was shot and killed by police, was a lawyer who was having problems with his law firm.

He stole several guns from his family – a crime. He was in possession of firearms – in violation of a 2015 court order. He brought those firearms into a gun-free zone – another crime. And then he killed people, which is also against the law, in case you weren’t sure.

Somehow, none of those laws kept Cetin from carrying out his bloody massacre.

Cetin may ultimately be charged for illegal possession, breaking the gun-free zone regulations, and stealing guns from his family, but those charges are probably not going to matter much. The five counts of murder – and any separate terrorism charges that may come down from the feds – will be more than enough to keep him in prison for the rest of his miserable life.

As of Sunday, law enforcement officials were unwilling to speculate publicly on a motive. And since Cetin is a Muslim who posted the phrase “SubhanAllah” on his Tumblr page prior to the attack – that means “Glory to Allah” – we can expect the liberals running the media to look under every possible rock before coming around to the truth…if they ever do. When violence arises from Islam, the world looks the other way.

When Cetin was arrested near his home on Saturday night, he did not resist. The arresting officers described his state as “kind of zombie-like.”

Cetin, a Turkish immigrant, does not have a social media history that would lead one to see him as a radical terrorist. That doesn’t mean he isn’t one, but it shows you that no matter how good we get at “profiling” these monsters, there will always be those who will slip through the cracks. And it shows you how foolish we have to be to consider making those cracks even wider – something our collective PC mentality is making a reality.

But even if this turns out to have little or nothing to do with radical Islam, Friday night’s killing spree shows us how our gun control laws provide us with a (very) false sense of security. Worse, they take away what security we might otherwise be able to wrap ourselves in. The gun laws are enough to keep your average mall shopper from packing heat, but they don’t do anything to keep killers from obliterating human life.

We need to come back to reality. That’s the only place that holds the solutions we seek.
