'We all deserve to be here': Immigration activists rally to support DACA

Twenty-one-year-old Rosa Hernandez is one of the young, fearless faces of immigration advocacy in Tulsa.

The self-described “freedom fighter” and president of Dream Act Tulsa Oklahoma was the vocal leader of a rally in downtown Tulsa on Saturday, fighting for young immigrants at risk of deportation if the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, often dubbed DACA, expires in March.

“We all deserve to be here,” Hernandez told a crowd of about 80 gathered in front of the Tulsa County Courthouse on Saturday afternoon. “We all deserve the right to live. And we all deserve the right to be here with our families.”

At the rally, activists spoke in support of the imperiled immigration program, which has shielded young immigrants from deportation and granted them the ability to work and enroll in colleges. The Trump administration in September said it was rescinding the program.

Rally attendees also condemned the Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office 287(g) agreement with the federal government to enforce more stringent immigration priorities.

In the first 10 months of 2017, the number of ICE detentions at the Tulsa Jail nearly doubled compared to any of the previous three years, according to an October Tulsa World analysis.

Hernandez is similar to many DACA recipients in that the U.S. is the only home she knows. She came to the country from Tijuana, Mexico, with her mother and brother when she was four years old. She attended Booker T. Washington High School and now works as a chiropractic assistant.

“I went through a really hard time (when) I found out that I was undocumented because I realized then that I couldn’t reach the dreams that I thought that I could … just because I didn’t have a piece of paper that said that I was born here,” Hernandez told the crowd.

A coalition of political and advocacy groups joined forces at the rally, including Dream Act Oklahoma Tulsa, the Immigration Rights Coalition, Tulsa Women’s March Continues, Green Country Democratic Socialists of America and Indivisible.

After a handful of public speeches, the group marched down Denver Avenue to the Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office and the Tulsa Jail.

The groups were demonstrating on behalf of three demands: the passage of legislation to protect “Dreamers”; the cessation of the county’s contract with ICE; and the establishment of Tulsa as “a true sanctuary city for migrants and refugees.”

Amairani Perez, 20, came to the U.S. from Acapulco, Mexico, at the age of 5. The OSU-Tulsa student is the vice president of Dream Act Oklahoma Tulsa.

Perez said the county’s arrangement with ICE is lucrative for the county and detrimental to those affected by it.

“The county jail has a contract with ICE that directly is profiting off of undocumented folk that are going through the system,” Perez said. “They’re unjustly keeping them for days ... and then releasing them to places where they are being subject to kidnappings, to human trafficking.”

Tulsa County Sheriff Vic Regalado has said he believes the partnership helps fight crime. He has acknowledged that people who are undocumented may be deterred from reporting crimes out of fear of deportation, according to a previous World story.

Recently elected Sen. Allison Ikley-Freeman, a Democrat, joined the rally to show her support for Tulsa’s immigrant and refugee population. She said the U.S. has long been a place immigrants can achieve their dreams, but the current threats to those who are undocumented betray that legacy.

“We took their hope and we’re betraying it,” Ikley-Freeman said. “That’s just not how we make Oklahoma a better place to live.”

NO! You took the hope of American Citizens and you're betraying it. American Citizens are the victims here, not illegal aliens.

Rosa Hernandez, another trouble-maker. ICE should have arrested and deported the whole bunch of them with all of them gathered in one place.

And no, people who came here illegally DO NOT deserve to be here.
