Bryson ready to announce immigration plan

Daughter of Wilson County couple killed in crash will be present

Republican gubernatorial hopeful Jim Bryson will unveil plans in Nashville today on how he would address illegal immigration as governor.

With the candidate will be Heather Lynn Steffek, the daughter of Sean and Donna Wilson of Mt. Juliet, victims of a vehicular homicide authorities say was committed by an illegal immigrant.

“It’s his first major statement on what will be the state’s illegal immigration policy that we'll be talking about this summer and fall,” Bryson spokesman Lance Frizzell said.

The tragedy surrounding the Wilsons made headlines around the state after federal and local authorities said that Gustavo Reyes Garcia, 28 - in addition to the allegation of killing the Mt. Juliet couple - has accumulated dozens of criminal charges.

He has been arrested 14 times in Nashville without being flagged by federal authorities for being in the country illegally, police said.

Arrest number 15 came after he was charged with killing the Wilsons on June 8.

Bryson will make his announcement 3 p.m. today at Room 12 in Legislative Plaza.
