West New York man accused of sexually assaulting 8-year-old girl

A West New York man in the U.S. illegally made his first court appearance yesterday on charges he sexually assaulted a girl when she was 7 and 8 years old, officials said.


Bail was set at $100,000 cash only when the Guatamalan native, 39, appeared on charges of aggravated sexual assault, endangering the welfare of a child and child abuse, the criminal complaint says. He allegedly sexually assaulted the girl, now 8, on three occasions.


Immigrations and Customs Enforcement has placed a detainer on him, meaning that even if he is able to post bail, he would not be released.


He appeared in Central Judicial Processing court via video link from Hudson County jail in Kearny.
