    Whom do we blame?

    Whom do we blame?

What kind of person responds to a routine traffic stop with a blazing gun?

The shooter would have to be stupid, psychopathic, intoxicated to the point of insanity or wanted for some terrible crime.

Such people aren't like the rest of us.

Yet police officers know enough to expect anyone they stop to fit any or all of those descriptions. On any day. In any car. That is one of the hard facts of police work, and it is one of the reasons the police deserve our respect and appreciation.

This year, three Valley police officers have been killed in the line of duty.

Late Sunday evening, Phoenix police Officer Bret Glidewell could have become the fourth. The driver of the truck Glidewell stopped stuck a gun out the window and fired away. Glidewell survived. His bulletproof vest gets the credit.

Community shock and outrage are entirely appropriate. The police stand between our orderly, law-abiding lives and chaos. Any assault on them is an assault on our peace of mind.

    That's not overstated.

    That's not complicated.

The man subsequently arrested in the Glidewell shooting is an illegal immigrant.

That man, Jose Abel Cabrera, has not been tried and convicted. Under our judicial system, which also stands between our orderly lives and chaos, he is innocent until proven guilty.

But he entered this country illegally, and that's all some people need to know.

They want to add "illegal immigrant" to the list of the kinds of people who might respond to a routine police stop with blazing guns. They say this shows what happens when you don't secure the border - and they say it as though there is dispute over the need to secure the border.

    It is not that simple.

It is true that Cabrera would not have been on the streets of Phoenix if this country had full control of the border. This newspaper has been calling on the federal government to fix the broken immigration system for many years. The border has been reduced to chaos by illegal smugglers who serve this country's demand for illegal drugs and illegal workers.

Walls and tough talk won't erase the effect of decades during which migrants came here for jobs. They won't change labor needs. There are an estimated 12 million undocumented immigrants in this country. Their population was allowed to grow large because their labor is good for our economy.

The vast majority of them are hard-working people who made the same decision that you might have made. They left desperate, jobless circumstances for a chance at a better life. Their labor has enriched this country. There is evidence illegal immigrants do not commit crimes in numbers disproportionate to their population.

In this nation of immigrants, our latest wave of newcomers is largely undocumented. That is not because they are inherently disrespectful of the law. It is because the federal government does not provide sufficient visas to satisfy the nation's need for labor. Like waves of immigrants before them, today's migrants are met with suspicion and distrust. It is historic and it is ironic because immigrants built this country and immigrants continue to enrich it. There used to be signs that read: "No Irish need apply." Now there are people who want to characterize all "illegal immigrants" as inherently dangerous and different from "us." But it is not that simple.

If an illegal immigrant named Jose Abel Cabrera shot at Officer Glidewell, then he is dangerous and different from the rest of us. However, his impulse to kill would be due to his criminal tendencies, not his immigration status.

The vast majority of illegal immigrants are people who want order, security and opportunity just like the rest of us.

The Federal Govt is to blame! They're the ones who have done nothing to stop the invasion, and everything to encourage it. Why else would we see story after story of criminal aliens being deported then returning to commit more crimes. Then when they are charged with capital offenses, we basically have to let Mexico decide their punishment. So yeah, there's someone to blame, all those who swore under oath to protect us from invaders, this includes the traitors in high offices who are stepping on The Constitution to bring about the NAU. Do they not know the penalty for treason is death...

Police arrest man suspected of shooting officer

Phoenix Officer Bret Glidewell is sending a powerful message after his shooting Sunday night. The rookie cop says: "If Phoenix Police had had more enforcement and deterrence I probably wouldn't of been been shot." Glidewell made the statement through the police union, the Phoenix Law Enforcement Association.

The union broke with police chiefs last week claiming they should be allowed to call on the feds whenever they encounter illegal immigrants during traffic stops. Police say Glidewell was shot by an illegal immigrant from El Salvador. 35-year-old Jose Cabrera was arrested accused of shooting Glidewell during a traffic stop. Cabrera ran but was caught later at his home in north Phoenix.

A representative for the police union says he had a meeting with Mayor Phil Gordon to address the policy concerning illegal immigrants on Friday and warned Gordon if they didn't change policy, another officer would likely be shot by an illegal immigrant. It happened quicker than anyone expected.
