A 21-year-old man is scheduled to appear in Door County Circuit Court on Monday to face charges in connection with the abduction of a 16-year-old Houston girl.
The man, believed to be a native of Honduras who is in the United States illegally, is being held in the Door County jail pending at least three charges, two of them felonies, said Capt. Dan Brinkman of the Sturgeon Bay Police Department. The decision on charges will be made by the Door County district attorney's office.
The man and the girl were living in an apartment in Sturgeon Bay, where they came because he followed shipbuilding industry work around the country, Brinkman said. She was not injured.
"She and the suspect had an argument (Thursday) night, and she left the apartment and hailed a cab," he said. "She requested a trip to the Sturgeon Bay Police Department, where she came up to the desk and said who she is."
The girl left her home and disappeared after fighting with her mother about a month ago, Brinkman said.
"I think she just got herself in over her head," he said.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement plans to put a hold on the suspect because he is apparently in the country illegally, Brinkman said.
