Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice David Prosser wins
MADISON — Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice David Prosser is declaring victory over challenger JoAnne Kloppenburg.
Final county tallies show Prosser with a 7,316-vote lead over Kloppenburg. State election officials are not declaring a winner in case Kloppenburg decides to request a recount.
She has until Wednesday to call for one. Her campaign says she's weighing her options.
Prosser campaign manager Brian Nemoir issued a statement saying the will of the electorate is clear and Prosser has been re-elected.
He said Prosser extends his appreciation and respect to Kloppenburg and her "spirited campaign."
Unofficial returns initially gave Kloppenburg a 204-vote lead over Prosser.
But the Waukesha County clerk announced she had failed to report 14,000 votes, which swung the election for Prosser.
Kloppenburg faced an uphill fight against Prosser, a 12-year court veteran and former Republican Assembly speaker.
But she got a boost in the weeks leading up to the election as her supporters worked to turn anger against Gov. Scott Walker and the union rights law against Prosser.
The law's opponents hoped a Kloppenburg upset over Prosser would tilt the court to the left and set the stage for the justices to overturn the measure.
