WM GHEENCampaign opposes in-state tuition for illegals

Campaign opposes in-state tuition for illegal aliens

    Chad Groening - OneNewsNow - 3/26/2009 5:00:00 AM
A grassroots immigration reform organization has launched an effort to prevent in-state tuition bills from being passed in nearly a half-dozen states across the country.

Americans for Legal Immigration PAC, or ALIPAC, says its campaign has already helped stop a new effort to get in-state tuition in Arkansas for individuals who are in the country illegally. But there are still battles in California, Colorado, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Wisconsin over various bills that would provide such a tuition benefit.

ALIPAC president William Gheen notes advocates of illegal immigration are trying to get the legislation passed in these target states as a first step toward their goal of a blanket amnesty for all illegal aliens living in the U.S.

"[It's] a domino-type attempt where they are trying to pass these [bills] in several states to use their victories to reinforce a push for the 'Dream Act' amnesty, which focuses on in-state tuition and amnesty for illegal alien college students for the larger amnesty for over 15 million illegal aliens," he explains.

Gheen points out even though ten states already have some type of in-state tuition statute for illegal immigrants, all but one of the states passed it into law without adequate public knowledge or debate. That is why he says ALIPAC wants to ensure that the public is forewarned about the efforts in these new states.

"Only if enough people on the ground around the country get stirred up, get the phone calls, emails, faxes, and letters pounding these state lawmakers in these five remaining states -- if we do that, the bills will fail," he contends. "If people sit on their duffs, the bills will pass."

Surveys show that close to 80 percent of constituents in the targeted states are opposed to in-state tuition for illegal aliens, Gheen notes

Remember the American Citizens don't always know to call their elected officials in a voting bill's time frame.

    What a mess
