SAN DIEGO – Authorities released the name Monday of a 21-year-old woman who died over the weekend, allegedly after getting an injection of a black-market pharmaceutical purchased at a Golden Hill grocery store.
Mountain View homemaker Andrea Suastegui went into medical distress almost immediately after receiving the injection Saturday evening, according to San Diego police and the Medical Examiner's Office.

She died at Paradise Valley Hospital a short time later.

Suastegui's family told investigators she visited the market in the 1000 block of 25th Street in search of a remedy for flu-like ailments she'd been suffering, police Lt Kevin Rooney said.

After purchasing a medicine of some type, the woman and her husband went to a home on South Francis Street, where a friend administered it via syringe, he said.

Officials did not disclose what type of substance Suastegui had taken.

Sunday, homicide detectives served a search warrant at the store and seized a stash of drugs allegedly hidden in its inventory, Rooney said.

Earlier, undercover officers had bought medicine without a prescription there, according to police.

The owner of the business, a Mexican national, was turned over to U.S. Customs and Border Patrol officials, along with his daughter.

They were being held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center while the investigation continued.

Illegal Medication Leads To Suspicious Death

(CBS) SAN DIEGO, Calif. A woman was pronounced dead Saturday at a San Diego hospital, after allegedly buying prescription drugs over the counter from a Mexican national and his daughter, who are now in custody.

Her family told the medical examiner's office that the 21-year-old woman had flu-like symptoms and bought some prescription medicine without a prescription at the produce market.

She and her husband went to a friend's home and the friend gave the woman an injection, and she went into medical distress almost immediately. Medics were called to the scene almost immediately.

Before a warrant was served, undercover detectives allegedly bought medicine without a prescription. A stash of medicine was seized.

The store's owner and his daughter were turned over to U.S. Customs and Border Patrol. They are being held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center while the investigation continues.

They reported on this story in the local news, the store is a Mexican fruit and produce store, also selling so called health aids and other junk to gullible Mexicans. Along with that they sold prescription drugs without prescriptions. And it turns out the owners are most likely illegal aliens as well. Ah, the joys of multicultural living here in Mexico's Finest City.

More tests planned in death of woman who injected drug

    By Joe Hughes

Police said more toxicology tests are needed to determine what caused the death of a 21-year-old woman who collapsed after taking medicine she bought at a Golden Hill market over the weekend.

Andrea Suastegui was pronounced dead at a hospital after taking the drugs Saturday. Her husband, Luis, declined to comment until complete autopsy results are known, he said through a translator Monday.

An autopsy conducted Sunday was inconclusive, said San Diego police homicide Lt. Kevin Rooney. Results of toxicology tests that may further pinpoint the kind of drugs she was given will not be available for several weeks.

Andrea Suastegui had been suffering flulike symptoms Saturday when she and her husband drove to the Frutería El Palsa Market on 25th Street near Broadway and purchased prescription medicine without a prescription, Rooney said.

After the drug was administered with a syringe, the woman almost immediately went into medical distress. Police and paramedics were called about 4 p.m. and she died at a hospital just before 5:30 p.m.

The couple lived on 36th Street in Mountain View.

In a follow-up investigation at the market, an undercover police detective purchased medicine from a store employee Sunday and then found a stash of medicine in the produce inventory at the market after serving a search warrant, Rooney said.

The market owner, Niceforo Herrera, 58, and his daughter, Clara Herrera, 34, were taken into custody and turned over to the U.S. Border Patrol.

Niceforo Herrera is an undocumented immigrant; his daughter's status is unclear, Rooney said.

Both are being held at the downtown Metropolitan Correctional Center while the investigation continues into the illegal dispensing of prescription drugs and syringes from their store, Rooney said. They have not been charged with any crime connected to the death.

Regular customers of the produce store were shocked to learn of the incident as they gathered in front of the padlocked market Monday.

“They sold fresh fruit,” said Guerrero Sumano. “I didn't know they sold drugs.”
