OFA CHAIR ON IMMIGRATION REFORM: WE'RE GOING TO 'FORCE IT THROUGH THE HOUSE'

OFA CHAIR ON IMMIGRATION REFORM: WE'RE GOING TO 'FORCE IT THROUGH THE HOUSE'

by TONY LEE 22 Jul 2013 1070 POST A COMMENT

Barack Obama's former campaign manager who now heads an advocacy group promoting the President's policy initiatives said the group will try to pass comprehensive immigration reform in the House of Representatives.

“We are going to force it through the House,” said Jim Messina, the chairman of Organizing for Action, according to the Washington Post. “I will sit with you and cry when Barack Obama signs his name on that law and millions of people come out of the shadows."

Volunteers for Organizing for Action, the latest iteration of Obama's 2012 reelection campaign structure, gathered in Washington, D.C. to plan "Action August" in which the group will try to rally grassroots support for Obamacare and comprehensive immigration reform. Messina addressed the crowd along with Obama.

The Senate passed a comprehensive immigration bill last month, but there has been stiff resistance to such a measure in the House.

As the Post notes, Organizing for Action has struggled since it formed earlier this year. It has only raised $13.1 million through June after announcing a goal of raising $50 million for the year. The August activities will also test the group's grassroots strength.

OFA generated embarrassing headlines when it only attracted eight people last month in Indiana and twenty in Tennessee for rallies in support of immigration reform.

"Action August" activities will begin on August 4, which is Obama's birthday, as House Members go back home for recess.

Head of Obama’s TOTALLY “non-partisan" OFA on immigration bill: “We’re going to force it through the House"

Team Obama knows quite a bit about forcing legislation through Congress, and that’s exactly what they’re gearing up to do with the amnesty for illegal immigrants.

Obama’s campaign-turned-political wing Organizing for Action, which was approved by the IRS as a “non-partisan" group at the same time they targeted Tea Party groups, is leading the charge.

    from Breitbart (emphasis mine):

Yeah, that sounds completely “non-partisan" to me.

Exit question, am I the only person out there who thinks Jim Messina looks exactly like Arnold Ernst Toht from Indiana Jones?

I know what you’re thinking, liberals. And no, I did not just say that Jim Messina is a NAZI. I said he totally looks like some guy who played one in a movie.

Pro-Obama group targets Boehner on immigration reform

Organizing for Action is pressuring House Speaker John Boehner to bring comprehensive immigration reform up for a vote.

In a mass email Thursday, the nonprofit organizing group created to push Obama’s second term agenda called on supporters to call House Speaker John Boehner’s office “to tell him you want to see him bring comprehensive immigration reform to a vote in the House.”

After calling the Ohio congressman, OFA supporters are encouraged to fill out a form to tell the organization how the call went.

OFA further offered a ready-made tweet for people to send to the House Speaker and “let John Boehner know it’s time to stop dragging his feet.”

“.@SpeakerBoehner, the time for immigration reform is now. Don’t stand in the way of our future. #TakeItToTheHouse,” it reads.

At a press conference Tuesday, Boehner took issue with a reporter’s question, asserting that he has taken “a hands off approach on immigration.”

Boehner interrupted the reporter’s question, TheDC’s Alex Pappas reported, disagreeing with its premise.

“Nobody has spent more time trying to fix a broken immigration system than I have,” he said.

“I talked about it the day after the election. And I’ve talked about it a hundred times since,” Boehner added. “While some may disagree about how we’re going about fixing the broken immigration system, it’s been a big goal of mine.”

Boehner has favored a step-by-step approach to reform over the large-scale immigration law overhaul passed by the Senate.

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney Tuesday called Boehner’s commitment to immigration reform “a little laughable.”

According to the email, the organization will be calling out lawmakers who the group believes are “are refusing to act on immigration reform” and rallying in support for the “the ones who are fighting with us to pass the biggest reforms of our immigration system in decades.”

Last Thursday OFA announced that nearly 600 volunteers at more than 100 phone banks made more then 20,000 calls for immigration reform.

Emmy Ruiz, the immigration campaign manager for the organization, signed the email to supporters, which also featured a link allowing supporters to share their stories about why they support immigration reform as well as a link to a donation page.
