DHS Evades Questioning at OGR Visa Waiver Hearing

Rep. Ron DeSantis (FL-06), Chairman of the Subcommittee on National Security, in conjunction with the Subcommittee on Health Care, Benefits, and Administrative Rules, held a hearing today examining terrorism and the Visa Waiver Program.

Kelli Ann Burriesci, the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Screening Coordination for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), was unable to provide to the committee basic information and continually evaded questioning.

Kelli Ann Burriesci serves as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Department of Homeland Security’s Screening CoordinationOffice (SCO). Working in the SCO since2007, Ms. Burriesci is responsible forcoordinating the Department’s screening andcredentialing policies in way that facilitateslegitimate travel and the issuance ofimmigration benefits; ensures individualprivacy and redress opportunities; and deters,detects, and denies access to or withholdsbenefits from individuals who may pose athreat to the United States. Ms. Burriesci alsoserves as the DHS senior redress official forthe Department.

Before joining DHS, Ms. Burriesci took abreak from Federal employment and workedin the private sector focusing on identitymanagement programs that provide a layer ofsecurity for Federal transportation programs and Federal personal identity verificationcredentials.

Beginning her career in public service in2002, Ms. Burriesci worked at the U.S.Government Accountability Office (GAO),where she performed program evaluations ina number of areas including budget andperformance integration, contracting andacquisitions, and food safety.

Prior to GAO, Ms. Burriesci managedSyracuse University’s Fund for Syracusecampaign supporting higher education.A native of Long Island, Ms. Burriesci earneda Bachelor of Arts from the State Universityof New York at Binghamton, and a Master ofPublic Administration from SyracuseUniversity.Ms. Burriesci joined the Senior ExecutiveService in February 2012, and completed theDHS Executive Capstone Program in 2015.
