Poll: 66 Percent Believe Illegal Immigration Hurts CT

Poll: 66 Percent Believe Illegal Immigration Hurts CT

    Norwalk Patch
    By Chandra Johnson Greene

A new poll commissioned by the Federation for American Immigration Reform reveals that most Connecticut residents believe overall immigration to the U.S. should be reduced.

Two-thirds, or 66 percent, of Connecticut residents that participated in a recent nationwide poll believe illegal immigration is hurting the Nutmeg State, according to a statement releasedby the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR)

The poll, which was commissioned by FAIR and conducted by Pulse Opinion Research last month, also reveals that 67 percent of Connecticut voters oppose in-state tuition aid for illegal aliens looking to attend public universities. There is a bill currently being considered by the state that would allow children of undocumented immigrant aliens to qualify for in-state tuition.

State Sen. Toni Boucher, a Republican who represents Bethel, New Canaan, Redding, Ridgefield, Weston, Westport and Wilton in the 26th Senate District, told Patch last year that passing the bill would take away spots from citizens and legal aliens.

    The poll also revealed that:

    • 68 percent believe the state should be involved in immigration enforcement
    • 39 percent believe illegal immigrants take jobs from American citizens, while 35 percent believe they fill jobs American workers will not do.
    • 51 percent support reducing overall immigration to the U.S.

"It is clear that elected officials in Connecticut and most of the state's congressional delegation in Washington are out of step with the views of the people who put them in office," Dan Stein, president of FAIR, said in the statement.

According to FAIR, there are 120,000 illegal aliens currently living in Connecticut with 85,680 of them in the workforce.

New Poll Reveals Connecticut Voters Overwhelmingly Support Immigration Enforcement and Reductions in Overall Immigration

    WASHINGTON, Jan. 30, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire

A new statewide opinion poll reveals that likely Connecticut voters overwhelmingly believe illegal immigration is harmful to the state, and half would like to see overall levels of immigration to the United States reduced. By large margins, voters oppose policies, supported by Gov. Dannel Malloy and other state leaders, which would reward illegal aliens in Connecticut. The poll of 500 likely Connecticut voters was commissioned by the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) conducted by Pulse Opinion Research during the week of January 3 and has a margin of error of +/- 4.5%.

Two-thirds of likely Connecticut voters, 66 percent, say that illegal immigration negatively affects the state.

Substantial majorities of voters also want the state to punish employers who knowingly hire illegal aliens and want state and local police to notify federal immigration authorities when they have reasonable suspicion that an individual is an illegal alien. Voters are also firmly opposed to efforts to grant in-state tuition subsidies to illegal aliens attending Connecticut colleges and universities.

Additionally, Connecticut voters were asked about their views on legal immigration. A majority of respondents, 51 percent, believe that overall levels "are too high and should be reduced," while only 9 percent believe immigration should be increased.

Among the key findings of the poll:

    • 66% believe that illegal immigration negatively affects Connecticut.
    • 67% oppose in-state tuition subsidies and/or admission of illegal aliens to public universities.
    • 68% support state involvement in immigration enforcement, similar to policies enacted in Arizona and other states.
    • 39% believe illegal immigrants take jobs from American workers, while 35% believe they fill jobs Americans will not do.
    • 51% support reducing overall immigration to the U.S., while only 9% support increasing immigration.

"It is clear that elected officials in Connecticut and most of the state's congressional delegation in Washington are out of step with the views of the people who put them in office," noted Dan Stein, president of FAIR. "In spite of continued high unemployment and crippling budget shortfalls, the governor and many in the legislature continue to promote policies that encourage illegal aliens to take jobs and take advantage of public benefits in Connecticut." According to research by FAIR, illegal immigration costs Connecticut taxpayers nearly $1 billion annually.

"Even in the heart of New England, voters overwhelmingly oppose rewarding illegal immigration and want overall levels of immigration reduced. It is a message that political leaders in Connecticut and around the nation would be well advised to heed," concluded Stein.

I don't believe they are out of step as much as they willfully IGNORE what their constituents want!
