[Watch] Angry Citizens Mob City Council, Demand Action, Ouster of Police Chief, Mayor

Posted on 6 May, 2014 by Rick Wells

In what is described as a complete takeover of the Albuquerque, NM, city council chambers, citizen protesters filled the room, demanding immediate action. They seek an end to a seemingly endless string of police shootings as well as removal of and possible criminal charges against the police chief and mayor.

Protestors served a people’s arrest warrant upon Albuquerque police chief, Gorden Eden, which sent him running for the exit.

Almost forty people have been shot by the Albuquerque police since 2010, with 25 of those being fatalities. The perception of random use of excessive force by APD was reinforced by the U.S. Justice Department, which recently issued an extremely critical review of the department.

The shooting of homeless camper James Boyd, as he surrendered and complied with police commands, was a flashpoint in the tensions between the police and the community. Other shootings have followed, and the feeling among many within the Albuquerque community is that they have a tyrannical, out of control, and threatening police force.

Council President Ken Sanchez described the events saying, “I called a brief recess in the hopes that order would be restored, but some members of the crowd persisted in disrupting the meeting. It’s unfortunate that the Council was not able to hear from everyone who signed up to speak, and was not able to complete some very important business on tonight’s agenda, including some Charter amendment dealing with the organization of the police department. I’ll be calling a special City Council meeting this Thursday so that we can address the many important issues we were not able to get to this evening.”

Police Chief Eden issued the following statement, “We understand there are those in our community who have expressed concerns about APD issues related to the Department of Justice report. We are working hard to make proactive improvements now and in conjunction with DOJ recommendations,” said Eden.

“While we welcome constructive discussions, we do not believe disruption of tonight’s city council meeting was a productive way to meet those goals.”

More civic action is expected from those who organized the demonstrations as well.

VIDEO: Citizens Take Over Albuquerque City Council, Call For the Arrest of Chief

“We now serve a people’s warrant for arrest on Albuquerque Police Chief Gordon Eden.”

    May 6, 2014

Angry protesters took over Albuquerque City Council Monday night calling for immediate change at APD and the ousting of both Albuquerque’s Police Chief, Mayor and more.
Protesters even called for the arrest and issued a “people’s warrant” to APD Chief Gordon Eden.
“This is no longer your meeting, this is the people’s meeting,” protester David Correia, an assistant professor at the University of New Mexico, said into a commandeered microphone as shown in the KRQE video below. “We now serve a people’s warrant for arrest on Albuquerque Police Chief Gordon Eden.”
This type of action is incredibly heartening! As more and more people refuse to accept such brutality, we will begin to see some very real change.

These protests stem from a string of police involved shootings, and the subsequent Justice Department investigation.
“Officers used deadly force against people who posed a minimal threat, including individuals who posed a threat only to themselves or who were unarmed,” the report stated. “Officers also used deadly force in situations where the conduct of the officers heightened the danger and contributed to the need to use force.”
