1 Dead, 26 Wounded In Weekend Shootings

CHICAGO (STMW) – A 16-year-old boy was killed and at least 26 others have been wounded in shootings across Chicago since late Friday.

About 8:30 p.m. Sunday, the teenager was shot to death in West Englewood.


The boy was shot in the head about 8:30 p.m. in the 5900 block of South Justine Street, police said.


The boy, of the 1000 block of West 78th Street, was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office. His name was withheld Monday morning pending notification of his family.


Police said the boy is a documented gang member.


Saturday afternoon, two teens were hurt when shots were fired during the Bud Billiken Parade.


The parade continued well after the victims were shot near 42nd and King Drive, but many people in the crowd left following the violence, the Sun-Times reported.


An 18-year-old man was approached by a group of males near the parade at 12:37 p.m. in the 4200 block of South King Drive, police said.

An argument broke out and someone in the group opened fire, striking him in the arm.


A 17-year-old was shot in the hand and buttocks during the melee, police said.


The man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where his condition was stable, according to police. It wasn’t clear where the 17-year-old was taken for treatment.


The most recent non-fatal shooting happened early Monday in the Humboldt Park neighborhood.


A 28-year-old man was shot about 2:45 a.m. while eating with another male and female inside El Taconazo Restaurant, at 4124 W. North Ave., police said.


A male who was at another table with “several females” left the restaurant, came back with a gun and started arguing with the 28-year-old. He eventually shot him in the chest and ran off, police said.


The victim was taken in critical condition to Stroger Hospital, police said.


At 7:06 p.m. Sunday, a man was shot in the Ashburn neighborhood on the Southwest Side.


The 21-year-old man was standing outside in the 8400 block of South Kilbourn when someone walked up and shot him in the left foot before taking off in a vehicle, police said. He was taken to Christ Medical Center in good condition.


Sunday afternoon, a teenage boy and a man were shot within 10 minutes of each other a block apart in the Woodlawn neighborhood.

About 4:35 p.m., the 26-year-old man was in the 6700 block of South Langley when someone walked up and opened fire, striking him in the abdomen and buttocks, police said. The person then got into a black Dodge Charger and drove off.

The man was taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition, police said.


Ten minutes later, a 16-year-old boy was shot in the right leg in the 6700 block of South Champlain, police said. He told police he was walking on the sidewalk at 4:45 p.m. when he heard shots and felt pain.

He was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital where his condition was stable.


At least 20 others have been wounded in shootings across the city since late Friday.
