HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. (AP/Gray News) – Two students opened fire at a suburban Denver middle school Tuesday afternoon, killing one student and wounding seven others.

Authorities said the suspects had been taken into custody. One is an adult male and the other is a juvenile.

“We did not have them on any radar,” Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock said of the suspects.

Spurlock said the wounded had been taken to area hospitals. Several of them are in critical condition and were taken into surgery. No staff or officers were injured.

The sheriff’s department tweeted Tuesday night that one student, identified as an 18-year-old male, had died.

The shooting began at about 1:53 p.m. at STEM School Highlands Ranch, a charter school in an affluent suburban Denver community.

School staff alerted police. There is not a school resource officer assigned to the school, but the school is located near a police station and it hires private security.

“Quite a few shots were fired,” Douglas County Undersheriff Holly Nicholson-Kluth said.

Deputies arrived two minutes after the shooting began and heard shots as they arrived, authorities said.

“I have to believe that the quick response of the officers that got inside that school helped save lives," Spurlock said.

At least one handgun was recovered at the school. The sheriff said he was uncertain if there were any other weapons.

Nicholson-Kluth said that many kids self-evacuated. Others were being reunited with parents at a nearby recreation center.

A car believed to belong to one of the suspects was found in the school parking lot.

STEM School Highlands Ranch is a public charter school with more than 1,850 students in kindergarten through 12th grades, with an elementary, middle and high school.

The shooting comes a couple of weeks after the 20th anniversary of the mass shooting at Columbine High School, in which teenage gunmen killed 12 classmates and a teacher. The Columbine perpetrators took their own lives during the attack.

Columbine High School is 7 miles away from STEM Academy.

One of the two shooters accused of opening fire inside a Denver-area school, killing one student and wounding nine others, will make his first appearance in court Wednesday.
Initial charges against Devon Erickson, 18, will be announced at 1:30 p.m. local time, officials said at a morning press conference.

The second suspect — a female who is a minor — will not be in court Wednesday, said George Brauchler, the district attorney for Colorado’s 18th District, which covers Douglas County.

Brauchler said he hasn’t yet determined whether the underage suspect will be charged as an adult.

The two suspects allegedly entered STEM School Highlands Ranch just before 2 p.m. through the middle school entrance, according to Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock. That entrance did not have metal detectors, he said.

Two handguns were used in the shooting, which left senior Kendrick Castillo, 18, dead.

Spurlock clarified earlier reports that initially identified the minor suspect as a male, saying that person is now being identified as female. He declined to say whether the suspect was transgender.

“At the time, the individuals we believed were in custody were two males. One of the suspects is female,” the sheriff said.

“You have to understand … this individual is a small, young person. The identity wasn’t obvious to us when they were taken into custody.”

Spurlock also said a total of nine students suffered injuries in the shooting. Three remain in intensive care while the rest have been released from the hospital, he said.

Deputies did not exchange gunfire with Erickson or the other suspect before taking them both into custody, the sheriff said.

Two suspects are in custody following the deadly school shooting at a charter school near Denver.

Police say 18-year-old Devon Erickson and a juvenile opened fire at the STEM school Highlands Ranch Tuesday just after lunch.

"When we were exiting the building there was a trail of blood," said an unnamed student.

Investigators said the two shooters began firing in two separate locations.

An 18-year-old student was killed, and 8 others were injured.

At least two students are still in serious condition.

Fernando Montoya told a local news station that his 17-year-old son was shot three times.

"A guy pulled I believe a pistol, I'm not sure, out of a guitar case, and start to shoot," he said.

The school, home to more than 1,800 students grades K through 12, was put on lockdown as police went on the hunt for the shooters who were both students at the school and not previously known to authorities.

"As officers were arriving at the school they could still hear gunshots as they were entering the school," explained Undersheriff Holly Nicholson-Kluth of Douglas County.

The suspects, who were reportedly armed with a handgun and other weapons, confronted law enforcement officers when they arrived. Police struggled with them to take them into custody.

Details are emerging about the lives of the two suspects.

In May of 2014, Erickson expressed hatred for Christians on Facebook.

"You know what I hate?" he said. "All these Christians who hate gays, yet in the Bible, it says in Deuteronomy 17:12-13, if someone doesn't do what their priest tells them to do, they are supposed to die," he said in his post. "It has plenty of crazy stuff like that. But all they get out of it is 'ewwwwww gays'."

KMGH Denver reported that sources said the second suspect is transgender male in the midst of transitioning from female to male.

The Denver Channel reports that the motive "went beyond bullying and involved revenge and anger towards others at the school," and that one suspect "was involved in legal and illegal drug use and had been in therapy."

The shooting at STEM took place exactly a week after a gunman killed two students and wounded four at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte.

It also comes nearly three weeks after the 20th anniversary of the Columbine school massacre that killed 13. Columbine is located just seven miles from the STEM school.

Meanwhile, police are investigating a motive in the shooting and say the suspects could be charged as adults.

Erickson will appear in court at 1:30 p.m. on May 8. It's not clear when the juvenile will appear in court.

. . . His 16-year-old accused accomplice, referred to in court by his lawyer as Alec McKinney, was listed on the court docket by the name Maya Elizabeth McKinney but was addressed by the judge during the hearing as Mr. McKinney.

Denver's ABC television affiliate, citing an unidentified police source, has reported that the younger suspect identified as transgender and had been bullied for it.

Erickson's hearing was televised live, but the judge closed McKinney's hearing to cameras.

District Attorney George Brauchler said he would decide by Friday whether to charge McKinney as a juvenile or adult.

Dressed in dark blue jail garb with short-cropped brown hair, McKinney said little in court except to answer softly, "No your honor," when the judge asked the defendant if there were any questions.

The judge refused a defense request to unshackle McKinney for the hearing.
