LONG BEACH, Calif. —A woman was fatally shot and two others were wounded during a gathering on a Southern California street in memory of a man who was shot to death there a day earlier, authorities said.

The gunfire erupted around 9 p.m. Monday in Long Beach as a crowd attended a candlelight vigil, Officer Ivan Garcia told Southern California News Group.

The victims were taken to a hospital where one died and one was in critical condition.

Police did not immediately release any suspect or motive information.

At the scene, evidence markers covered the ground near a spot on a sidewalk covered with dozens of candles.

Archie Harris, 49, of Bellflower was found there Sunday night with a gunshot wound to the upper torso and was pronounced dead.

A police statement said detectives arrested Gilbert Crawley, 48, of Spokane, Washington, during a traffic stop Monday and booked him for investigation of murder and illegally possessing a firearm.

“Evidence has revealed Crawley and Harris were known to one another and walking side-by-side on Orange Avenue when Crawley opened fire on Harris. The exact motive for the shooting remains under investigation,” a police statement said.

Crawley was held on $2 million bail. It was not immediately known if he had an attorney.
