2 Minutes Show That Dems Celebrated Getting Chemical Weapons Out of Syria Too Early

Reports of Syria removing its chemical weapons were greatly exaggerated?

Reports on Tuesday revealed Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his allies again targeted civilians in a deadly attack where chemical weapons were used. The attack was one of the worst chemical attacks in the six-year Syrian civil war.

Rewind back to the fall of 2013, when the Obama administration was working with Syrian and Russian leaders to ensure that Assad's stockpile of chemical weapons would be turned over and destroyed. A deal was reached, and the Obama administration and fellow Democrats applauded the achievement. The agreement was struck a year after former President Barack Obama drew his now infamous "red line" in August 2012, when he threatened military action against Assad if he used chemical weapons.

For several years, Democratic lawmakers and Obama administration officials touted that Syria turned over "100 percent" of its chemical weapon stockpile.

"It turns out we are getting chemical weapons out of Syria without initiating a strike," Obama said.

"We struck a deal where we got a hundred percent of the chemical weapons out," then-Secretary of State John Kerry said.
The Obama White House even tweeted out a statement promoting its achievement.

In May 2015, Bloomberg reported that Assad used chemical weapons after the Obama administration declared Syria had turned over its entire stockpile. Obama dismissed the report and said chlorine is not "historically" considered a chemical weapon–despite chlorine gas being one of the world's first chemicals weaponized for modern warfare.

After the report, Obama administration officials continued to say that Syria turned over all of its chemical weapons.

Then-White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest went on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" and said four times that Assad did not have a chemical weapons stockpile.

"Right now, Bashar al-Assad doesn't have a declared chemical weapon stockpile," Earnest said in September 2015.

Before leaving office, Obama was asked in a "60 Minutes" interview if he would have done things differently when it came to Syria.

"Would you take it back?" Steve Kroft asked Obama, referring to the red-line comment.

"I would have, I think, made a bigger mistake if I had said, ‘Eh, chemical weapons. That doesn't really change my calculus.' I think it was important for me as president of the United States to send a message that in fact there is something different about chemical weapons," Obama said. "And, regardless of how it ended up playing, I think–in the Beltway, what is true is Assad got rid of his chemical weapons."

PolitiFact Retracts ‘Mostly True’ Ruling That U.S. Removed ‘100 Percent’ of Syria’s Chemical Weapons

'Subsequent events have proved John Kerry wrong'

Fact-checking website PolitiFact on Wednesday retracted a 2014 article that found it "Mostly True" the Obama administration helped broker a deal that successfully removed "100 percent" of chemical weapons from Syria.

"We struck a deal where we got 100 percent of the chemical weapons out," then-Secretary of State John Kerry said on NBC's "Meet the Press" in July 2014. Kerry was referring to a deal the U.S. and Russia struck in September 2013 in which the Russians agreed to help confiscate and then destroy Syria's entire chemical weapons stockpile.

When making its ruling, PolitiFact cited a statement from Ahmet Üzümcü, director general of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.

"The last of the remaining chemicals identified for removal from Syria were loaded this afternoon aboard the Danish ship Ark Futura," Üzümcü said in June 2014.

In the end, PolitiFact called Kerry's claim "Mostly True" because there were still discrepancies between how many chemical weapons Syria claimed to have and how many outside observers claimed the country had.
"There are still 12 former chemical weapon production facilities which need to be destroyed," one human rights worker told the site.

Nearly three years after Kerry's comment, a chemical weapons attack devastated a rebel-controlled village in northern Syria, killing somewhere between 70 and 100 noncombatants, including dozens of children. The United States has fingered Syrian President Bashar al-Assad as the perpetrator of the attack.

The next day, PolitiFact pulled its earlier fact-check "because we now have many unanswered questions."

"We don't know key details about the reported chemical attack in Syria on April 4, 2017, but it raises two clear possibilities: Either Syria never fully complied with its 2013 promise to reveal all of its chemical weapons; or it did, but then converted otherwise non-lethal chemicals to military uses," the site wrote.

"One way or another, subsequent events have proved Kerry wrong," PolitiFact concluded.

    Chemical weapons are a horror.

Again, are these people any more dead from chemical weapons than from bombings?

Also, might it be if we hadn't stirred up trouble, in that part of the world - Syria wouldn't be at war? We may very well be responsible for the war in Syria - it wouldn't be the first time.

This country armed some faction over there. I seem to remember a discussion of they didn't know which side to arm?

We should stay out of other countries' business. It is not our place - not in any shape, form or fashion. We certainly shouldn't be involved if we aren't sure which side we are on -

This chemical weapons thing has been used as an excuse for some very, very deplorable actions on the part of this government.

We are told someone did this awful thing - our media tells us. Think about it, look at what our media has been making up since Pres. Trump became a real contender - lies, lies, and more lies.

The American people don't have a clue what is going on in Syria, why we are involved in any way.

These people sucked in air from the airstrike against the munitions factory that stored chemicals in there of some type. The blast from the bomb explosions will themselves make you sick. This is all just another hoax just like the hoaxes of the Arab Spring in Egypt and Libya.

That is a good possibility - but as the man said, 'Don't let a good crisis go to waste'. In other words, lie and spin it to our benefit.

That's exactly what this is. I hope there is some valuable underlying strategy and the "babies" thing was just the excuse for it. But damn if I know what it is at this point.

Okay, the reason is now out from a "senior white house official'. It was to send a message to Iran and North Korea that if provoked, the US will act.
