Report: Power Sought to Unmask Americans on an ‘Almost Daily Basis’

Former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power "unmasked" some 260 people in 2016, including in the lead-up to President Donald Trump's inauguration, according to a new report.
Most of Power's unmasking happened in the final months of former President Barack Obama's administration, Fox News reports.

"Unmasking" refers to the process of revealing the names of individuals which are otherwise obscured but incidentally collected in intelligence reports. Some have suggested that Power, along with former National Security Adviser Susan Rice, may have misused the unmasking procedure, including by unmasking Trump campaign associates in the lead-up to the 2016 election.

In July, Rep. Devin Nunes (R., Calif.), the chairman of the House Oversight Committee, wrote to Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats to inform him that the committee had learned "that one official, whose position had no apparent intelligence-related function, made hundreds of unmasking requests during the final year of the Obama Administration." That official is likely to be Power.

Power, who served as U.N. ambassador from 2013 to 2017 during the Obama administration, did not respond to a request for comment from Fox. However, a previous statement from her lawyer noted that "while serving as our Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Power was also a member of the National Security Council responsible for advising the President on the full-range of threats confronting the United States. Any insinuation that Ambassador Power was involved in leaking classified information is absolutely false."

Previous U.N. ambassadors have made unmasking requests, Fox reported, but not nearly as many as Power did.

Power is expected to testify before the Senate and House Intelligence committees as part of their probes into Russian meddling in the 2016 election; she will appear before the House committee in a private hearing in October.

He is supposed to step up to the plate as promised. He is too busy appointing profiteers to positions they are not qualified for - troublesome.

Replacing swamp a with swamp b is not a solution but a moneymaker for his crew of greedy rich, unfortunately to the detriment of our environment, health and natural wildlife which is essential to our preservation & eco-system...."In Wildness is the Preservation of the World" -Thoreau. Trump appoints people that say kill all the wildlife, we want the oil, gas, uranium and dump the toxic residues into the peoples' waters. I am sorry I voted for this greedy stupidity.

AND it comes with broken promises for removal of daca and all millions of illegals - they are still here, still plopping out babies one a year each woman on our social services, aka taxpayers. I am still surrounded by illegals, city is still receiving funds to continue protecting illegals, they still have jobs Americans should have.

Another Obama Official Allegedly Unmasked HUNDREDS Of Americans During Final Days In Office

Samantha Power, Obama’s former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, "unmasked" Americans at such a rapid rate in the administration’s final days in office that she averaged more than one request per day in 2016.
Multiple sources, who could not comment publicly on the matter, told Fox News that over 260 requests were made by Power in 2016 to identify Americans whose names surfaced in foreign intelligence surveillance:

The details emerged ahead of an expected appearance by Power next month on Capitol Hill. She is one of several Obama administration officials facing congressional scrutiny for their role in seeking the identities of Trump associates in intelligence reports – but the interest in her actions is particularly high.

The report indicated the reason that Congress is especially interested in Power’s role in unmasking Trump officials is due to a July 27 letter sent from House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes to Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats.
In the letter, Nunes said the committee learned "that one official, whose position had no apparent intelligence-related function, made hundreds of unmasking requests during the final year of the Obama Administration."
Fox News added that Power is believed to be the official that the letter was referring to and that although "previous U.N. ambassadors have made unmasking requests," the number is usually in the "low double digits."
Power is just the latest Obama official caught up in the unmasking scandal, as former national security adviser Susan Rice was recently caught lying about the unmasking of Trump officials.
While it is not necessarily a crime to unmask U.S. citizens in foreign intelligence surveillance, it is illegal to release their names – something that happened when a person with access to the information leaked former national security adviser Michael Flynn’s name to The Washington Post.
