25% Brits Give Up Heating To Afford food
1/4 of British mothers turn heating off to afford food
Sun Jan 6, 2013 7:25AM GMT
Soaring energy bills in Britain have forced one in four mothers to turn off the heating in order to afford food for their children, a new survey has found.
A recent study of 1000 households by the Energy Bill Revolution campaign revealed that a shocking 23 percent of British families already have to choose between buying food and using heating.
According to the study, more than half of British families turn the heating off when their children are out, while 45 percent wrap up in blankets or duvets to keep warm during the day.
Director of Energy Bill Revolution Ed Matthews said the situation represents a crisis especially in Britain as developed country.
“We call ourselves a developed country but no one should have to make the choice between feeding their family and heating their home,” Matthews said.
The campaign is urging the British government to reduce fuel poverty by using money from the carbon tax to insulate homes.
The campaigners say the program could reduce bills by £300.
