The "migrant workers" who helped farm where my dad grew up knew good and well there were no jobs due to mechanization in that area. They told my dad that they were headed to welfare to report they had duly applied for work, there was no work available, and now hand over the welfare!!!

We still have a LOT of farming, and I am not saying that low skilled labor will become completely unnecessary, but the need for immigrant labor is exaggerated. We have learned that since the Carter administration federal support for agricultural machinery research really dried up and US farmers started relying on foreign labor. The federal money spent on subsidies would be far better spent on figuring out ways to reduce our need for any foreign labor.
