Police said they believe 18-year-old Alex Rios, 15-year-old Gilbert Tafoya and 16-year-old Nathaniel Carrillo beat two homeless men to death inside an empty northwest Albuquerque lot near Central Avenue and 60th Street Northwest.
According to the criminal complaint, Tafoya told police the three teens have attacked more than 50 homeless people in the past year, but this was the furthest they’ve taken an attack.
Rios is 18, so he will be charged as an adult. The district attorney's office said the other two will be tried as adults, but held in a juvenile facility.
A spokeswoman for the DA's office told Action 7 News the two younger teens are "considered Serious Youthful Offenders, which includes anybody 15, 16, 17 who is indicted or bound over for first degree murder."
All three are expected to make their first court appearances Monday.
