CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) -- A gunman with a rifle opened fire at an IHOP restaurant in Nevada's capital on Tuesday, wounding six people and himself and killing two uniformed National Guardsmen in a hail of gunfire during the morning breakfast hour, authorities and witnesses said.

A third person was killed in addition to the servicemembers, and the gunman was not expected to survive, said Carson City Sheriff Kenny Furlong.

It wasn't immediately clear whether the gunman had any connection with the military or the guard, said Nevada National Guard Sgt. Mike Getten. He said guard members were meeting at the restaurant.

Witnesses said a man pulled up in a blue minivan around 9 a.m. at the IHOP restaurant in a strip mall on Carson City's main street. He shot a man on a motorcycle, then walked inside the restaurant and started shooting, said Ralph Swagler, owner of Locals Barbecue in the same strip mall as the IHOP.

Swagler told the Reno Gazette-Journal that after several minutes, the man walked outside and began firing into the Locals Barbecue and an H&R Block in the strip mall.

"This happens in third-world countries, not here," Swagler said.

Fran Hunter, who works at a Sierra Le Bone, a pet shop just north of the IHOP, told the newspaper that the suspect fired at least two shots toward Casino Fandango across the street.

"I don't know what's happening to my city," Hunter said. "This happens in L.A. or Las Vegas but not here."

Local and state police and FBI agents descended on the scene, and yellow tape surrounded the parking lot at the restaurant, which is near a Kohl's department store.

Renown Regional Medicare Center spokesman Dan Davis told The Associated Press four victims of the shooting were being treated at the hospital in Reno, but he said he could not discuss their condition or provide any other information.

Kurt Althof, public relations manager for Care Flight, told the Gazette-Journal three victims had been taken to the hospital by helicopter and that two were in critical condition.

Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Chuck Allen says extra security measures have been put in place on state and military buildings in northern Nevada as a safety precaution.

Gunman kills 3, wounds 6 at Nevada IHOP

(CNN) -- A gunman opened fire Tuesday at a Carson City, Nevada, IHOP restaurant, killing three people and wounding six others before turning the gun on himself, police said.

The suspected gunman is not expected to survive, said Sheriff Ken Furlong of the Carson City Sheriff's Office.

The shooting began shortly before 9 a.m., according to Furlong. When authorities arrived, those who called in the incident identified the shooting suspect as a man lying wounded in the parking lot.

Two victims were found dead at the scene, and seven others were taken to a hospital for emergency surgery. One of the wounded died during surgery, Furlong said. He did not know which hospital was treating the suspect.

Two of the dead were members of the Nevada National Guard, according to Maj. April Conway.

Chuck Allen with the Nevada Highway Patrol said police are still investigating a possible motive, but he said regardless, officials were taking precautions in case military personnel were being targeted.

"When you have people in uniform randomly targeted ... we take that seriously," Allen said.

Conway said three other Nevada National Guard members who were among the injured are being treated at local hospitals. The shooting took place just a few miles from the Nevada National Guard state headquarters in Carson City.

Furlong declined to identify the suspect, who he said used an automatic weapon in the shootings.

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — A man with a rifle shot an entire group of five uniformed National Guard members eating breakfast at a Nevada IHOP on Tuesday, killing two of them and another person in a hail of gunfire, authorities and witnesses said.

The suspect also shot himself and later died at a hospital. Six people were wounded in the attack.

Authorities weren't saying whether the gunman targeted the Guard members. But Nevada National Guard spokeswoman April Conway said there's no indication he had any connection with the Guard.

Conway didn't know why the five Guard members had met at the IHOP, in a strip mall on Carson City's main street. But she noted the restaurant is about four miles from the Guard's headquarters complex.

The two Guard members killed were a man and a woman.

Authorities were at first worried about the violence being more widespread. They locked down the state Capitol and Supreme Court buildings for about 40 minutes, and put extra security in place at state and military buildings in northern Nevada.

"There were concerns at the onset, so we took certain steps to ensure we had the capability to embrace an even larger circumstance," Carson City Sheriff Kenny Furlong said. "At this point in time it appears to be isolated to this parking lot."

Witnesses said the gunman pulled up in a blue minivan around 9 a.m. and shot a man on a motorcycle, then walked inside the restaurant and started shooting. He then walked back outside and fired shots toward a barbecue restaurant and an H&R Block in the strip mall, and toward a casino across the street.

"I don't know what's happening to my city," Fran Hunter, who works at the Sierra Le Bone pet shop just north of the IHOP, told the Reno Gazette-Journal. "This happens in L.A. or Las Vegas but not here."

Furlong said officers received a call about the gunfire and responded within minutes. He said the suspect was wounded and lying in the parking lot when they arrived at the scene.

Furlong added the person who was shot on the motorcycle also was alive when officers arrived, and was transported to a hospital.

Local and state police and FBI agents descended on the scene, and yellow police tape surrounded the parking lot at the restaurant, which is near a Kohl's department store. A body lay on the ground at the scene, covered with a white sheet except for the feet, which were in tan boots.

"As you know when you have people in uniform who are randomly targeted for whatever reason this may have been, it is a safety precaution we take very seriously," Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Chuck Allen said.

Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney, who is scheduled to speak in North Las Vegas on Tuesday, expressed sorrow over the shooting.

"I am deeply saddened by the senseless violence today in Carson City," Romney said in a statement. "My thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families."

Other lawmakers who offered condolences to the victims' families included Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev.; Rep. Dean Heller, R-Nev.; and Rep. Joe Heck, R-Nev.

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Authorities say the man who opened fire on a table of uniformed National Guard members at a Nevada restaurant had two guns in addition to the AK-47 he used in the rampage, but he left them in his vehicle.

The shooting Tuesday morning at a Carson City IHOP left four people dead and eight wounded. Authorities say the gunman, 32-year-old Eduardo Sencion (SEN'-see-ohn) of Carson City, also shot himself in the head and died at a hospital.

Carson City Sheriff Kenny Furlong says Sencion was born in Mexico and was in the U.S. under a valid U.S. passport.

He says investigators found another rifle and a pistol in the minivan that Sencion drove to the restaurant.

Furlong says the motive in the shooting spree remains unclear, but family members say Sencion had mental issues. Sencion had never been in the military and had no known affiliation with anyone at the restaurant.

After turning his gun on himself, Sencion survived for roughly two hours before succumbing to his injuries, the sheriff said.

Furlong said Sencion, a single man who was born in Mexico but was a US citizen, was not believed to have known anyone at the restaurant, and that all bar one of the victims had been shot inside the business.
