Liberals are not just progressive dems. There are many others too. In fact while I read a good biography of Thomas Jefferson, who was considered a liberal, his liberal views were those based on putting more responsibility in the hands of the people. Not freebies.

When one looks at it, they are liberals today, but coniving dictatorial despots who want to make you think you will get salvation from government, yet in shadows, they will attach a set of puppet strings to those dependent upon them, and those they illegally confiscate from to pay those who are dependent. Thereby gaining total control over everybody. That isn't liberal at all. It is totalitarian though.
